Is a score in the mid 700's good enough for AmEx?

Postby bmw1990Z » Sun Mar 18, 2012 10:40 am

I am a college student with a credit score in the mid 700s. I have maintained a basic citi credit card with a credit line of $2000 since July of 2011. I always pay off my balance in full each month, I've never gone over the limit. I am interested in getting an American Express Delta SkyMiles card. I thought this might be a great place to go first. I want to know if I have a decent chance at getting approved? Thanks in advance!

You do have a decent chance. It would probably be easier to get one of their credit cards first, though. Do you travel Delta alike?

Plane tickets: CSP
Groceries: AMEX BCP, Penfed Platinum Rewards,Citi TYP
Clothes: Express, Amex BCP, Discover IT

Bars, clubs, tomfoolery: CSP, Citi Forward, Discover IT, Freedom

People get too hung up on FICO scores. A college kid with less than a year of credit can have a 700+ score very easily; but there is no meat behind it i.e. length of credit history. Going for a prime card like an AMEX is a tall order.

AMEX uses their own internal scoring system, so it is very hard for any of use to say that you will or won't be approved. I recommend going to their website to see if you are pre-approved for anything before you apply. At the very least, you may want to wait until July so your Citibank is reporting as a year old.

from what i've read on here others my age (and in the same situation credit wise) have been approved for the delta gold card. How would I see if I'm pre approved? I've also been looking at the gold charge card which I personally think may be easier to get because its not a credit card. Thoughts?

do you fly a lot with delta? I recommend the gold card. it is not credit card, is a charge card. I got approved with same history length as you.

i fly rather frequently but not always with delta, whomever has the best price. I was looking at the gold card. Can you transfer points earned to miles for the gold card or is it just for the premium rewards gold card? The reason I want an amex other than a citi forward card is because the rewards system is much greater. Plus, I like the idea of the charge card. If I did apply should I cancel my citi card?

Follow this link:

You enter some personal info and they will do a soft inquiry to see if you are pre approved for anything. They generally push Blue cards and the Charge cards more with this feature, but if you qualify for any Blue card you are good for the Gold Delta Skymiles.

It is true that the charge cards are easier to be approved for. But if you really want the Delta SkyMiles why not go for that one.

No it is always best to keep your oldest account opened. You were lucky enough to get a prime card (Citibank) with no credit history. You will not only want it opened for the age, but also for the credit line.

Cool. One question though, will doing this "soft inquiry" show up on my credit report? I just want to make sure it wont look like I'm applying for a bunch of cards.
