AmEx Centurion card offer from friend - perks worth it?

Postby thisisathrowaway » Wed Mar 07, 2012 7:40 am

Here's what I do know:

  • The card is 1500 dollars a year to cover the extra-card fee. I can afford that, and it would be cheaper than getting my own, which I don't feel like investing the effort to qualify for simply because I don't care enough for the platinum card to get it.
  • I've currently got a Premier Rewards Gold Card and will likely keep all of my spending on that card anyway as the point bonuses are that much better.
My only reasons, therefore, for wanting the card would be a) as a status symbol and b) to milk the concierge.

My questions are along those lines:
  1. What are the "added perks" per-se? Other than an even-more-extended warranty, what's the best thing someone's been able to achieve with the card so far?
  2. How effective is it as a status symbol?

Am I a moron? Probably, but I'd rather spend 1675 on two American Express cards and get more points and the same level of concierge over spending 5000 + 2500 on having my own Centurion with less points.

I believe the perks are free limo let's say your going on a business trip. You are going to Chicago, your staying at a Marriott, you are entertaining clients/customers. Let's say your about 30 minutes from the hotel, the concierge can have limos take you anywhere you need to be. Most limos would charge you about 150 or more, but with the Centurion I think they are free.

Let's say you want to take a helicopter ride around any city, with the black card this can be arranged.

Or you want to buy a Mercedes but you don't want to pay with a certified check, you can just use your Centurion card.

Want to go shopping but you don't want a large crowd around, you you can have Neiman Marcus, Saks, Nordstroms closed down for a few hours but you have to buy a lot of clothes or merchandise to get this done.

They arrange private parties.

When traveling if you want to go to any of the airport lounges, the Delta Crown, US Air Presidents Club, almost every place except Continental and United.

You have a private concierge service need any help making dinner reservations, or looking for any sporting event they will get whatever you need.

Room upgrades at any partner luxury hotel like the Four Seasons, the Ritz Carlton, free champagne.

A lot of perks.

Why do you want to milk the concierge?

I suppose I phrased it the wrong way. My goal would just be to make the most of the card, e.g. upgrades on hotel rooms, flights (both frequent for me), assistance with reservations at special venues (a lot of this, too). This is where it would help for me.

You must have a REALLY great friend who is willing to put you on his/her Centurion account as an authorized user.

Who are you trying to impress and what services from your current concierge do you use that you need/want more than you already have?

Keep in mind, not ALL of those perks are going to be free.

As far as I know, the Premier Rewards Gold card does not come with a concierge of any sort. Feel free to inform me otherwise, however.

If you haven't used a concierge then you should just get your own platinum AMEX which can do everything (almost) as a black card and only costs a fraction. As of now you have nothing to compare it to. Hotel and flight upgrades are not a 100% guarantee. Great seats however are.

Right, so that's the thing: I want to know what the exact differences are in the benefits for Platinum and Centurion members so I can decide whether the Centurion card is worthwhile. I'm already approved to upgrade my PRGC to a Platinum card, but I like the point spread on the PRGC. I don't feel like losing it by upgrading, hence my question and hence why I'm considering a second card. I could get a Platinum as a second card... but if that's the case, I might as well see what 1000 more a year buys me instead. See my point?

I can't tell you what my Platinum Concierge, Trevor, can't do for me. If your lifestyle dictates a limo and helicopter rides, then the Platinum concierge can make that happen. If I want to be put on the VIP list at a club, that too can happen. If I want front row seats at Lagy Gaga, that too can be arranged.

How about you get the Centurion and make some outlandish requests, and then I will call Trevor and ask him if he can do the same things for me. I guess that would be the best test of the differences in services. I am sure there would be a lot of people who would be interested as well.

What you could do is upgrade to the Platinum for a year, try out the concierge and see what they can do for you and if you aren't satisfied with that level of service, go for Centurion. You can always downgrade back to a Gold card later. I can arrange a private yacht, leer jet, or a private villa whenever I want it. The concierge has connections that you normally wouldn't have. I don't know what your requests/needs are so it is difficult to say. For my needs the Platinum concierge has never failed my needs/requests. Could the concierge arrange for an iPad 3 on release date? I don't know, I have the first one so I don't need another one. But I am willing to bet they could probably make that happen. Who knows, they might be available in the Membership Rewards First catalog, cash in some points and get it for free. Unless you are in the entertainment industry or sports and you feel you NEED to flash a Centurion card, having a Platinum card will accomplish all the things you could possibly want. Flashing your Platinum card will raise enough eyebrows for people to know you are a serious player.

Let me know what you decide, I am curious.
