Flight Upgrades using Platinum

Postby delta359 » Wed Feb 29, 2012 9:47 pm

Hi all,

I've heard a few friends tell me that they've gotten free flight upgrades to first class when they book their flights with their Platinum card. Is this common? Do you have to book through Amex travel? is this with just the Platinum card?

I'm thinking of booking a flight with my Gold premier rewards card so i can get more points...any chance of an upgrade? Or should I just use the Platinum card?

Thanks!

That is only with the Centurion card, and it isn't always a guarantee. And it only works on AmEx partner airlines. The AmEx Platinum card does not give you free upgrades to first class. With less flights each day it is also unlikely that a flight has open seats in first class.

Traveling with a former Platinum-carrying boss once, he had me moved up to first by flashing his card (he said). I thought it was cool until I realized that I had to sit next to him.

He probably thought he was cool tricking you into believing he got a free first class ticket for flashing his card.

I'd love to know which airline, lord knows I've asked many times on many carriers and they all look at me stupid when I ask about platinum first class upgrades.

Most likely the guy's boss had a platinum status with that specific airline/frequent flyer type upgrade. Certainly not an AMEX upgrade.
