640 credit score & want an AmEx credit card: Zync or Clear?

Postby bisbicos » Tue Feb 14, 2012 2:31 pm

I really want to get an Amex, however I dont believe I have good enough credit score @ 640 to get a bcp. I want to get my foot in the door with either a Zync or Clear. I've heard that you cannot upgrade a Zync card to a bcp. Is it possible to upgrade clear card to bcp?

Also is the clear card as easy to obtain as a sync card?

What do you guys recommend I do to get in with Amex and to get a bcp card eventually
Credit Cards
American Express: Fidelity Rewards (2% cash back) 9.5k
Zync NPSL
Discover: Discover More (5% rotating categories) 12k
Mastercard: Chase Freedom (5% rotating categories) 4.6k
Visa: Citi Forward (5x pts on restaurants) 15.7k
Citi Dividend (5% rotating categories) 5.6
Capital One Journey (1.25% cash back) 1.25k
BofA AAA (5% on gas) 2.5k
PenFed Platinum Rewards (5% on gas 3% groceries) 7.5k

Future Cards
US Bank Cash +
Chase Ink

Don't get too caught up on your FICO score because Amex uses their own internal scoring system.

Why do you have a 640 credit score? Any baddies? Bankruptcy? If you do have any lates or collections that are under 5 years old I wouldn't try right now.

The Zync will be your best bet to get in with Amex. Charge cards are easier to obtain than the credit cards like Clear and Blue Cash.

Currently the Zync cannot be upgraded at the cardholders request; however, I doubt that will stay in effect. Likely after a year or two Amex may offer an upgrade. I have also heard that Clear cannot be upgraded either but someone else will have to confirm that.

At any rate, you just need to get your foot in the door (Zync). After a year of responsible use, you can try for the BCP and it will be backdated to 2012 (providing you were approved for Zync this year). So, for the cost of two EX inquiries (Zync in 2012, BCP in 2013), by 2013 you could have your goal card of BCP.

Both cards are good for starters, i prefer clear because it is not a charge card comes with a no late fee, no AF and 25 dollars back after everyine 2500 you spend.
