629 credit score is good enough for American Express?!

Postby Okie21 » Thu Feb 09, 2012 9:29 pm

I posted my first thread a few minutes ago in the "general CC talk" section. It may be worth referencing to answer the following questions.

Anyway, i have been reading on here for about an hour and have noticed that people are saying to "stay away" from and "not apply" for Amex cards unless their score is over 700. I have gotten three Amex apps in the last three months (two Green, one Gold).

My credit score as reported by Equifax was 671 as of Oct 25th, and 629 score as of last week. The issue of why that makes no sense in laid out in great detail on my other thread. (ie.. payed in full every month, on time, NO over limit spending etc.....)

So my question is, why am i getting these apps in the mail if i have a low 600's score (which i still think is bogus and my dispute)? Also, even though they are sending me these could i still be denied for them if i applied?

Any and all feedback about this

Amex uses an internal scoring model as their primary basis for approval over FICO scores. If you are receiving a lot of preapprovals there is a good chance you can be approved for a ZYNC, Green or Gold card.

This will only be a soft inquiry and it is not a guarantee of approval. I would recommend a ZYNC or Green charge card for now. Even with your scores you are likely to get approved since Amex takes less of a risk on charge cards. Then, in a year, you can apply for a revolver (Blue, Delta etc) and it will be backdated to 2012.

If you have any recent lates or a bankruptcy then I wouldn't apply.

You really have nothing to lose but an inquiry.
