My experiance when calling to cancel an Amex card

Postby FutureBillionaire » Mon Jan 30, 2012 7:27 pm

I called Amex to inquire about cancelling my Gold card before being assessed the annual fee. Long story short, the lady offered me 5k membership rewards points and double points for 3 months to keep the card. She was extremely helpful. I actually want to apply for the blue cash everdyay that she offered me, but I don't want another inquiry right now. Amex has fantastic customer service.

That's a great example of how it pays to put all of your "vendors" up for review periodically, credit cards but also cable and phone service providers, pool cleaners, lawn care, etc. I recently called to cancel bottled water delivery and was made an offer for a price cut that changed my mind to keeping the service.

I doubt Amex would make such a gesture to me, though, as I've been known to take their bonus points and bolt. I'm sure I'm on their black list by now.
American Express: Blue Cash Preferred (groceries, 6%; gas, department store, 3%); Gold Delta SkyMiles (Delta Air Lines, 2 miles/dollar, free checked bag).
US Bank: Cash+ (utilities, phone, internet, restaurant, 5%; drugstores, 2%).
FIA Card Services: Fidelity Amex (everything, 2%); Fidelity Visa (everything, 1.5%).
Chase: Freedom (rotating, 5%); Amazon (Amazon.com, 3%); PriorityClub (IHG hotels, 5 points/dollar); Sapphire (not in use).

*All cards are registered with PriorityClub IDine program for 8 points/dollar at participating restaurants.
