Just thought I'd come back and let you know that I finally also bit the bullet, called up, applied, and got approved for my platinum card. I'm going on extended travel for work in a week or so, and the travel perks will be well worth it.

Can I ask how long you had your Gold Amex before you got the Platinum? Thanks!

I got my premier rewards gold card either in late January or early February. As soon as I got it, I was already regretting not going straight to platinum (although the first year no annual fee made it worth it, and I am fully taking advantage of the 2x points on gas and 3x on airfare!). I just called to get the platinum card yesterday, so I guess I had my gold for about 2 months before getting the platinum.

I probably would have gotten it earlier, but I wanted to pay down my balance first so I didn't look like a risk to them. I had charged close to $70k in one month (work expenses I was reimbursed for) and had gotten my charging privileges suspended twice during that month because my gold card was so new and my spending patterns were so high so soon. But I asked the cust. service rep if those suspensions would be negative against me, she said no, it was for both our protections they did that, not anything negative since I wasn't late paying (my billing cycle hadn't even closed), so once I knew that wouldn't affect me, I went for it.

As for my other history with Amex, I have had the original Blue card since 2006, at one point when I was less financially stable, I was carrying a balance of about 12k on there, I finally paid it off around 2008 or 2009, and haven't touched the card since. (I honestly couldn't even tell you if I have one, or if I cut it up when I finally paid it off!). So while I got the platinum only 2 months after my gold, my history with amex goes back 6 years with no late payments etc.

I was on the Gold card ( the regular one) around a year and a month. Then AMEX sent me an invitation for the Platinum; I have bitten the bullet and upgraded to Platinum after getting everyone's opinion in this forum.

Hi everyone! Love this board and the advice!

I came here after applying for the American Express card and being approved for the Platinum..I just came off a BK in August of last year but I was a good girl after it and within that time purchased a house, a car and rebuilt my credit so when I did come out of BK I was set.

I was worried about paying the annual fee on a card because I hadn't before but I do travel a lot and stay in hotels..I just rarely fly. I like to drive (I know I'm a scaredy cat!) but I want to go to Japan, Hong Kong and Mainland China soon so I'm thinking it will be a good ideal to keep.

Anyways, thanks for this thread and the invaluable advice!

The annual fee of the card pays itself when you utilize the Platinum correctly.

Ahhh... yes... the excitement of traveling from place to place or to a place the first time. I just love that kind of feeling. Same here, I plan to travel to those countries hence one of the two reasons that I upgraded to Platinum. Traveling is scary but at the same time fun and exciting :D

I might recommend you close your eyes very tightly as you fly into Hong Kong and not look at the sky as you come out of the airport then.

If you travel at all, it just makes sense to get the Platinum. it really does pay for itself very quickly

GOLD to Platinum upgrade.

Postby m20e3087 » Fri Apr 27, 2012 3:36 pm

My mom has been a GOLD members since Nov 2011. She wanted to know, how long she have to wait to get the Platinum. Most of her travel are overseas. Will AMX send her an upgrade offer, or should she just upgrade it online?
