I was sad to hear the forum convinced you not to upgrade to the platinum card. It is obvious to me that the people who gave you advise don't fully understand the benefits of the card!

There can be many embarrassing moments....

Like the time I was at the Ritz in San Fran at 2am ... When I realized the waitress in Seattle had my platinum card. The ritz checked me in anyway and platinum had a card waiting for me when I woke up.... Or the time my relative broke his femur in a remote country and Amex sent an emergency medical Lear jet and medivaced him to NY for free. Or the time The hotel in Las Vegas had a black out and Amex moved us to 5 2 br penthouse suites in the Mandalay Bay. Or the time Amex misbooked a hotel in Israel and picked up the $3000 mistake. or when my sisters gifts were stolen on the airplane and they reimbursed her .... The list goes on and on! I couldn't and won't live without it!

Well said! I have a Commonwealth Bank Diamond American Express and it's not a good thing to get out - which is why I have my secondary card - a NAB Visa, if you look at my Visa link in my signature, it blends in nicely compared to my Diamond American Express. Even though we have cards of high standard there are times that you need to have a backup card.

Were you referring to me or the other user?

I did took their suggestions and opinions into consideration. But after a days of posting my response of not upgrading to Platinum, I did change my mind and "bite the bullet". So now I am happily using my Platinum card.

Please explain, I had the gold, I don't travel much, but I use it for everything. Should I go platinum or is it a waste of time?

Ditch any cards with annual fees. Unless you travel allot they are nothing more than a waste of money.
Current FICO: 805 (Equifax)

The Platinum has great offers thought. I mean it sucks to pay $450 annual fee. But I would. Besides it looking good, look at the offers at the AMEX website

It is all about making a decision for yourself and being responsible for the consequences of that decision. Whether to go with Gold or Platinum is your own decision. How you use the card is up to you. How you maximize the benefits offered by Platinum is up to you.

If you want to go Platinum, then make sure you are willing to dish out and have saved for the $450.00 annual fee.

You posted that you don't travel much. So I assume you do travel but the frequency is less. I think Platinum is usually used by travelers or mobile professionals because of the benefits associated with it.

Great insight, I appreciate it. I think it's more of," I know I can get it and it looks good" type of issue. Just male pride. I travel once a year but I love AMEX and what they represent. But 450 is kind of dumb if I only go to Jamaica , florida, Bahamas, or Disney once a year. I'll just keep my gold. I spend 2500 a month, so the points pay my annual fee an it's worth it. Thanks guys.
