The message you received doesn't necessarily mean you are declined. If the suspense is killing you, it can't hurt to call Amex and facilitate the process. I don't know much about your credit history, but I'm guessing it's probably pretty good if you have a Platinum card and Starwood already. Tell them how you have been a good customer and enjoy their services, and you are looking to broaden your relationship with them. Explain how you want the Blue Cash Everyday for its benefits and for Amex's legendary customer service. Butter them up a little bit if need be. I found this number as their reconsideration line-- 800-567-1083-- and this one for new accounts-- 877-399-3083-- unless there is a different number to check the status of your pending account.

It should help your cause that you are being proactive about it and calling them. The most important thing is to be completely prepared for the call and any direction it could go. If it starts going poorly and they are leaning towards denial, I found an entertaining and informative page here: Reconsideration | Noob Traveler that offers a wealth of tips on how to handle it. You are already taking a very small temporary hit on your credit score with the inquiry, so the absolute worst thing that can happen is you walk away emptyhanded. Definitely try to stay positive and hopefully things will work out in your favor.

I recently applied for the BCP and got the same message. In a couple of days I checked the online status and it was approved. So, I know for many issuers this means thumbs down, but what it really means is just that the application needs a human review before a decision can be made. It isn't necessarily a decline. The Blue cards are hard to get an instant approval on for anyone from all I've read - most get this message and a lot of them are soon approved.

I want the BCP, but I'm going to wait until the fall when a few inquiries fall off. I can't wait to get the 6% off at grocery stores.

Thanks for the responses guys, and thanks for the congrats on the baby hematino. As of yesterday I still hadn't heard anything so when I left work last night I called the status line (866-314-0237) and he was able to verify that my application was approved.

I had also applied and been approved for the Capital One Cash Rewards card over the weekend, and I thought that the extra inquiry may have slowed down the approval, but he said there weren't any issues that slowed down the application. He just said that with this card more times than not it's just a slower process and that my credit must have been good since I was approved.
