American Express Global Travel Shield review? Good or bad?

Postby ESL » Fri Jul 01, 2011 1:18 pm

My family frequently goes on trips outside of the US where our regular medical insurance doesn't cover us. The Amex Global Travel Shield sparked my interest because it appeared to be a cost effective way to insure my trip. Namely medical coverage although their services cover luggage and trip cancellation or delays.

Surely a person on this forum must have used it before and can provide a review?

On complaints board there is a review calling it a rip off because American Express would not reimburse a cancelled trip due to prostate surgery. I am skeptical of that complaint's merit because the person also notes the coverage was purchased at cost of $397 and the dates don't match. Though if this was a pre-existing condition why would a $400 plan not cover?

I have purchased similar travel insurance policies through other companies but I have never used the AmEx Global Travel Shield. For the example review you referenced, additional information would be needed to determine whether or not that is a legitimate complaint.

If you do end up using it or someone else here has used it, please share your thoughts!

I purchased Trip Protector Plus through AMEX's Global Travel Shield. I had to cxl the trip (personal trip) due to my mother getting hurt and not being able to watch the kids while my wife and I were gone. Since my mother did not go to the Dr (she is adverse to them and doesn't have great insurance), Global denied the claim. Disappointing.
