How many applications does it take to get to the center of an AmEx card?

I stopped applying for AmEx cards many moons ago. Discover's rewards, customer service and online interface are hard to beat anyway.

Amex is preferrable to Discover on almost all measures if you have to choose between

If you have to choose between the two brands, Amex surpasses Discover on most third party independent measures that I am aware. JD Powers customer satisfaction and Better Business Bureau data favor Amex. Acceptance, particularly for travel and certainly outside of the U.S. skews that way.

My present sense though is that Citi with their Visa and Mastercard products appear to be most aggressive in the substance of what is being offered and how they are taking care of customers

The objective and independent data aside, while you appear happy with Discover, my experience is not and that the card belongs in the back of the wallet.

Here's how it worked for me...
I got my first CC through my bank with a $600 credit limit. I used this card for about 6 months and payed off my balance in full, and early everytime. Also, it's good to stay within 30% of your credit limit.
I applyed for both the Zync and the Blue cash. I got approved for the Blue Cash which suprised me because from what I hear, the Amex credit cards are harder to get than the charge cards.
It's really not hard to get an Amex if your are wise with your credit from the getgo. Pay your bills in full, and on time every month, and in no time, you will have a great credit score. Just don't do what I did and apply for too many cards at once... :) The one mentioned is a good to try for.
