JCB and UnionPay, but not Amex

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Wed Sep 06, 2017 6:01 pm

Has anyone else seen merchants post signs to advertise they take JCB (Japanese) and UnionPay (Chinese) but still not take Amex?

I know those cards have usually (not flawlessly) worked on the USA Discover network for years, but I find it an interesting indication of how Amex-averse some merchants can be that they'll arrange to take the Asian cards.

Or did something happen at Discover's end to make UnionPay and JCB run more smoothly on Discover, without merchants going out of their way to take JCB or UP?
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

I know only one merchant (bakery) that matches what you are saying. They have VISA, MasterCard, Discover, JCB, UnionPay logos but not Amex. They accept almost anything besides Amex.

Regarding Discover's end, they have agreements with JCB, Diners and UnionPay. So in theory, that cards should work normally with merchants that take Discover.

Has anyone on here actually looked in to getting a JCB card at all seriously?

I'm curious about your findings. I have looked into it a little bit.
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

Marukai (some sort of west coast warehouse club with Asian merchandise) markets a JCB card in some states that used to be a MF cult favorite.

I think JCB is both the network and the issuer.

Yes. It seems (very strange website and product listing overall) that if you spend between 5K and 49K annually on the card, you earn 3% caskback on everything.

There doesn't seem to be any confusion or unclear terms, but it seems fairly strange to me..:
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It
