Good bonuses for various Amex cards

Postby Vattené » Fri Feb 24, 2017 11:46 am

I happened to look at Amex cards in Chrome and saw some good introductory bonuses. Not a permanent offering, just something I chanced into when going to the site so it looks like a luck of the draw thing. I don't pay much attention to bonuses on a regular basis, so they may randomly target these normally, but some of the bonuses above the standard offering I noticed were (won't list spending or time requirements since it would just be from memory:
  • ED - 25,000
  • BCE - $250 + 10% CB on restaurants first 6 months
  • BCP - $250 + 10% CB on restaurants first 6 months
  • PRG - 50,000
  • Plat - 75,000

When I just went back to see what they offered, some were gone & some were just lowered but still better than standard bonuses (it's weird seeing PRG have a bigger bonus than Plat).

Blue Cash Everyday - $250, 0% for one year, guaranteed 12.49% thereafter

This was a mailed invitation to me. Last month I was offered to upgrade the card for a $150 bonus (I've had it for 3 years). Didn't take it, but it would make this card worth $400 for anyone considering going to the Preferred.
American Express: Blue Cash Everyday (10k), Everyday, ; Discover It (7.3k) ; Target (2.1k)

Citi: Diamond (2k) ; Bank of America: Cash Rewards (2.6k) ; Capital One: Quicksilver (3k) , Sony ; Chase: Freedom (3.7k), Slate (3k), (Amazon) ; Barclay Ring ; Synchrony: Walmart MC, Amazon, Ebates

I would do that if I could. I downgraded last year to BCE but now I'm commuting much more and the 3% gas would add up fast. I would proly come pretty close to maxing out the 6% too come to think of it.
Sapphire Reserve: travel & dining
Blue Cash Preferred: groceries & gas
Freedom: 5% cats
Double Cash: everything else

I get the $150 offer constantly. I've considered it, but I'm not sure if I want to push my luck by upgrading, taking their money, then possibly downgrading back to BCE in a year or two. A Freedom or Discover grocery quarter can change the value of paying the $95 AF.

My ED does not get offers to incentivize a PC back to EDP.

I picked up 35k SPG:
25k for $3k spend within 3 months
Plus
10k for an additional $2k spend within the first 6 months
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

That would be tempting, but I see why you would want to tread lightly with something like that. I never get offers to upgrade my ED (which was opened as an ED) either, FWIW.

I was pretty tempted to just apply for the BCE to get the $250. It wouldn't bother me to keep it open after the bonus if I didn't use it much. If I ever get a mailed/emailed offer like that I might consider it more seriously.

I max out the Freedom's grocery category every year they've had it. If you end up getting close but not close enough to max out the quarter, you can always buy gift cards. Plus the Freedom/Discover has gas and department store categories which make the BCP not a worthy upgrade when you can just keep the BCE.

Gift cards wouldn't work for me.

As far as retail gift cards in grocery stores, there really aren't any I like. I mostly eat out at independent or small chain restaurants...not places that would have their gift cards for sale in a grocery store. If a purchase isn't something I can eat, I probably want to price rewind it or get an extended warranty. So what gift cards would I realistically use? Add to that my concern that some data breach could give some hacker the gift card information. I've gotten Costco Cash to meet minimum spend in a rush before, but really just like using a CC.

As far as prepaid major network cards...it might work...but if I MS, I'd rather take AA risks with cards other than my two oldest.

Once the Costco PC goes into effect, I'll have a 4% gas card.

Usually they have their own gift card that you can use with no restrictions. Whole Foods and publix both have them. Say I have $250 left to spend towards the category, then I'll just buy a Whole Foods gift card so I can use the BCE to cover everything once it becomes 1%.

The gift card thing is great in theory but IMO it's a hassle in reality. Carrying a bunch of gift cards, tracking balances, etc, for every restaurant you may go to is just overkill to earn a few extra dollars in rewards. Not worth it for me.

I guess what I buy isn't exactly gift cards but store credit. I mostly only shop at one grocery store and suspect most other people do. Although, I would say I spend more on groceries than I do at restaurants, which I suspect a lot of other people do. It has been very easy for me to go through the Chase Freedom grocery category in less than three months.
