As I await my gold card, I have a question.

Postby ccmanner » Thu Jan 13, 2011 7:27 am

Hello,

I am a recent college graduate and was approved for a gold card immediately after applying for a Zync. I decided to go for gold. I don't plan on spending much on this card a month to start (200-500 on avg) as I've been getting my financial house in order. I am building my savings and don't want to splurge until I get a good cushion. I plan on keeping the card for a while so that I can grow with it. I also plan on taking at least one flight within the next year or so.

Question: Will American Express penalize me for not spending thousands of dollars a month on this card? I can easily fulfill the $500 over three months requirement for the 10,000 points, but I don't plan on spending thousands (or rarely 1,000 in the beginning) on the card each month. I know it may sound ridiculous but I've read horror stories online and I don't want my card randomly cancelled because I'm not meeting some shadow spending requirement. Figured I'd ask for some reassurance. Thank you very much! This forum has been a huge help over the course of my charge card research. The reviews were very helpful as well.

Thanks

No, they'll thank you for paying more than $25 a year. If you're not going to spend much, you're better off zync.

Point taken. Thank you very much for the insight. I have one year free. I'll see how it goes, but I agree that right it it is pretty clear that Zync may be the better option.

I actually had the same question....except I have the green and want to eventually upgrade to gold, and I was wondering if I didn't spend THOUSANDS of $$, would they cancel my account as well. I hope if I'm paying the annual fee I can charge whatever amount...

No you spend what you can pay back what ever you can afford, what items you need to purchase. After your first year on the basic gold there is a 125 annual fee, the gold rewards is 175.

The card you are thinking of is the Centurion. This card you need to spend 25,000 a month or hit 250,000 a yea. If not your supposed to be penalized. But no minimum spending requirement on the gold.

I am sure you can find a video on youtube on how to upgrade your Zync to Centurion. I will bet you 10 bucks, you looked into it already :)
