Amex MR Program + Delta Skymiles Program

Postby Scoobynoodles » Mon Nov 21, 2016 5:23 pm

Hi friends,

I've got a question for those who have/use both Amex MR cards such as Gold, PRG, Platinum and also have an Amex Delta Card such as Gold, Platinum, Delta Reserve.

With Amex's MR point system (3x for PRG, 5x for Platinum), what's the best way to maximize your points earnings with the Amex card whilst also trying to build status with Delta's Skymiles program using the Delta-Amex card? Is it only a pick-and-choose option? Could you build miles status just using Amex only card?

For example, if I book a flight w/Amex Platinum at 5x points, that's a very good way to build MR points. But because Delta and most airlines now have a dollars-spend requirement - Medallion Qualification Dollars (MQDs) - in addition to miles flown, building status is a bit harder than usual, so I would lose out on building status if flight is booked on Amex Platinum as opposed to Delta's card.

I think, it's a wasted effort to book a flight on Delta's site w/Amex Plat because I would lose out on the 5x bonus points and conversely I'd lose out on miles status by not using my Delta card, hence the pickle.

Before Amex added the 5x MR for flights, I always used my Delta card for flights. Now it's enticing to build up my MR points. Has anyone been in this predicament to pick which Amex card to use for sake of building both Amex MR points AND Delta Skymiles status? In what case can you increase both MR + Delta's dollar-spend requirement?

I'm fairly familiar w/Amex MR program but somewhat new to Delta's Skymiles program and am wondering how folks with both use their cards to maximize earnings potential. Thanks for your thoughts!

Actually that makes two of us. I'm in the same predicament with my Platinum and Gold Delta. I was considering alternating cards between each of my trips but the thing was if the Delta Skymiles was to restart in January, then I would cut the loss on Delta for one or two trips. My next major trip isn't happening until next summer and I was considering putting it on my Platinum since I can earn up to 100,000 points.

Right - I like the the fact that Delta & Amex are close partners and helps since I exclusively fly with Delta but then you're in a "pick and choose" process for which card to use.

I also need to learn more about Delta's program, like if I hit my level of status (Silver, Gold, Diamond...) I should just use my Platinum after the fact for booked flights to hit the 5x points.

I guess this goes back to do you maximize your MR points which can be used across the board - somewhat - to building and keeping your airline status. I wonder how other folks are managing them.

And...how would you hit 100k in points? Is that just for one flight trip booking? Or are you saying this is a 100k bonus for opening the card?

I'd approach it mathematically as:

The value of extra MRs
vs.
Number of flights * added value per flight for your marginal status.

If you fly Delta once a month on short flights, and Delta Reserve spending plus in-flight Miles only gets you Silver, then you might not be getting much from your status.

If Delta CC spending could get you Platinum or Diamond status, and you fly long flights every other week, then that's a different situation.

Got this in my email two days ago...sort of relevant...

"Enjoy a one-time $100 statement credit when you use your American Express® Card account ending in [my ED last 5] to make a single flight purchase of $500 or more with Delta or partners Air France, Alitalia, KLM, and Virgin Atlantic on amextravel.com by 12/31/16. No enrollment necessary."

My ED has been in the SD lately, and I've not flown Delta (or put other flights on Amex) for several months.

I had already started looking up the tickets and to fly business class is about 2500. Yeah I miscalculated. It's about 12500 which is more than 5000 for Delta. :ppp

Yeah I need to look for an analysis on using Platinum + Delta Amex cards to maximize MR points plus hitting your respective Medallion status. I'm sure using other airlines it's the same scenario.
