Amex Premier Rewards Gold Card - How Points / Airlines Work?

Postby Tony » Wed Nov 03, 2010 11:56 am

Hello All - Please excuse me if this has been already reviewed/answered (however I did attempt a search of the forum first w/o finding a complete response.

I'm new to the community, and also new to AMEX Premier Rewards Gold card.

My question's are as follows:
1) What airlines fall under the 3X points when using the card (is there a list)?
1A) Does it matter how you book the airline ticket (Expedia, Directly from the Airline, etc.)?

2) When purchasing gas for 2X points, do you have to pay at the pump or can you pay inside the gas station (does it matter)?

Appreciate the help and any advice provided!

Tony

I do not have the Premier Rewards gold card from American Express but I think when a credit card company gives points for airlines, gas and so forth it applies across the board to all purchases no matter what company it is. I did a search is this Gold card the same one?

Thanks for the reply. I believe the 3X points doesn't apply to all airlines, however I can't locate the list of airlines where it does. I'll try calling cust service.

It should work for any airfare purchase you pay for using the card. That's how the gas category will work too - any gas station that takes American Express at the pump will count for the 2x points, except warehouse club gas stations like Costco or Sams Club.

I have that card. Airline purchases get the 3X points if you make them directly with the airline. That is, the charge has to be from "American Airlines" or whatever, not from Expedia or other travel agent. Some travel agents, including online, actually post the charge through the airline, others do not. These days you will almost always get a better price directly through the airline or hotel anyway.

What the cc company looks at is the merchant's code. When you buy something at a gas station, even in the store, it will usually earn as a gas purchase. Anything spent at an airline will earn as an airline purchase.

As far as participating airlines, I think all major airlines count but you might have trouble with smaller and regional lines.
