American Express No Annual Fee Cards - Which Is Best?

Postby RJohnson » Sun Oct 31, 2010 11:24 pm

Which is the best no annual fee American Express? I am mainly interested in rewards and will rarely, if ever, carry a balance. I have good credit and don't see any reason why I wouldn't qualify for any American Express I choose.

Right now I am leaning towards the Blue but is there any other American Express with no annual fee that would be worth considering?

I think the blue's fine. If you really want to go for the rewards though you won't come around looking into the ones that actually do have an annual fee. However you have to PIF every month. Do a spreadsheet and compare the cards. You'll see if the rewards you can get are worth the annual fee or not.

There really are not many no annual fee American Express cards left anymore. I believe the Clear card was discontinued. The last year or two credit cards have been shifting a lot more towards charging fees since the reform went into effect. The Blue Cash can earn you a lot of money but only if you know how it works and have a spending pattern appropriate for it.

Current Cards:
American Express: Blue Cash, Simply Cash Bank of America: WorldPoints Platinum Plus Chase: Amazon, British Airways, Cash Plus Rewards, Freedom, Ink Cash Citi: Thank You Premier, Dividend Platinum Select Discover: More
Primary Everyday Card: American Express Blue Cash
Primary Travel Card: Chase Sapphire Preferred

Blue Cash is the best American Express no annual fee card

In the post credit card reform era, fees are the new way for credit cards to make money. Therefore you will find fewer American Express no annual fee cards these days.

Credit Card Forum strongly recommends the no annual fee American Express Blue. Not only is it the best American Express with no annual fee, but when it comes to rewards, it may be the best American Express ever. Check our our sponsored review of the American Express Blue to learn more.

Good luck!

You asked what is the best no annual fee card. But you should be asking which is the best card even if it has a fee. I've gotten over $1000 in rewards this year from paying $175 in annual fees. This was in the form of free airline tickets, hotels, and concert/show tickets. That seems like a good deal to me and is much better than $500 in rewards for no fee for example.

If you travel a lot even the $450 platinum fee can be a great deal. If you never travel then AMEX might not be as good as other options.
