Recent rumors/Tier One

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Thu Sep 29, 2016 4:42 pm

There have been anonymous whispers (or strategic leaks?) from Amex employees to bloggers. Something is coming, and Amex has registered the trademark "Tier One".

A Platinum holder on boardingarea called Amex to get information, and the CSR said the Platinum holder should not cancel out of CSR envy (implying that some changes would be coming to Platinum soon).

Some people (I've not investigated why) expect the news to arrive Oct 5.

It would be very interesting if AmEx offered current Platinum holders a spend challenge... Spend $4,000 get 30,000 MR points or something... To entice current cardholders to keep their Platinum card... Effectively taking spend away from the CSR sign up bonus... I feel like people would find the CRS less valuable without 100,000 UR points.

it's really just amusing to watch all of these morons cream their pants about a new credit card and a few extra hundred bucks in sign-up bonuses, especially people who just intend to cancel later.

if they come out with a new premium card to replace my Platinum with some new benefits, great, if not, who cares. either way, credit cards are designed to make profit for the bank, not your plebeian delusions.

The MF thread turned into a battle of image-focused metal enthusiasts against people who like actually useful perks. Not high-level discourse.

One thing to keep in mind (fittingly, I'm referencing something someone said on FT) is that we're in an echo chamber on this card. Community B looks at speculation from A, then C looks at B, then A thinks it must be right because someone said it on C.

I don't want a lot...just a few guest passes for Delta lounges.

I'm right there with you, Slap on a few extra benefits to match/compete with Sapphire Reserve if need be and anything else is just an added benefit. The rumors, speculation, hype on these cards are out of control lately. Worse than iPhone rumors and almost as bad as the horsesh*t I see on a daily basis from stock trading forums/social media.

Maybe some of this hype is planted by the banks themselves, who knows for sure. What's even worse is when all of these blogs lap it up and the nonsense bleeds over from the forums just for some quick click bait articles.

You mean as part of a PC to a higher-AF charge card? Or just to boost spending among people who will be keeping their cards and just haven't spent much lately?

There is such broad speculation, that if some of it is planted, I can't tell what part of it is.

I think the wise thing to do is to hold off on Amex charge card apps (or cancellations), or apps for non-Amex premium cards, for a few days.

I had a few big expenses (like a year of car insurance) which could help towards any high minimum spend requirement, but unfortunately they couldn't wait until 10/5.

I meant as a way to keep current Platinum cardholders from jumping ship, getting the CSR and closing their AMEX account.

Wishful thinking? Haha
