Hmm interesting - I would love to see what they have to offer. They have been hounding me with the PRG to Platinum Upgrade offers.

Just got the CSR for work based expenses and am only $500 away from meeting the spend cap after 2 weeks of spending. So it would be nice if they offer something good,.
CSR $24K | Discover IT $22.9K | AMEX BCE $15K | AMEX EveryDay $12.9K | Marriott Premier - $11K | Delta Platinum $10K | Freedom $6.5K | Freedom $6K | BOA Travel Rewards - $2.7K | AMEX Premier Gold

I'm actually pretty optimistic. Platinum works well for me, since I use the right terminals for lounge access, and have had a bit luck with Delta award availability. I also have other cards that make up for Platinum's weaknesses in many transactions.

But really, if I didn't have my particular travel habits, I'd be among those who saw it as vastly overrated.

Likewise, I might not love CSR as much as others do (but it's still one I'll go for eventually) but there's a lot of buzz about it in the CC world. So hopefully that's what Amex will be trying to top.

As far as what they need to offer in a new card (or improvements to Platinum) for me to keep my account open, the hurdle is very low. But as far as what they need to offer to get me to spend more on it, and win over/win back customers who don't have my travel habits...that is quite a high hurdle.

Amex via Twitter: Starting Oct 6, Platinum will earn 5x MRs on airfare booked directly with airlines.

No word if there will be other changes.

That's a good start, honestly. If you're using the card for traveling, that is a nice point base.
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

Maybe Prestige will join in and put back the Admiral's club - that was a great perk for me.

Yeah, I'll use one of the JFK ACs later this month. It is a nice perk, and I wish they had just increased the AF rather than take it away. I think there are better odds in getting a retention offer than in getting AC access extended, though.

I know some FT daredevils call Citi every 6 months for a retention offer, and don't hesitate to use the magic word "cancel". Right now I'm too busy using the free bag and lounge perks of AAPlat/Prestige to risk having a CSR close either account without playing my game. Maybe I'll play the game for Prestige in 5/17 and for AAPlat in either 1/17 or 1/18, depending on what the revived Aviator looks like.

*But, really, 5x MRs is not what I was hoping to see. The last time I bought a ticket with Platinum, I had a six-hour delay/cancellation/rebooking ordeal...and I was one of the few lucky ones! Prestige's delay benefits would have kicked in after just 3 hours. That's even better than CSR's delay insurance.

I'm lukewarm about this (if true). On one hand, airfare probably *is* my largest travel expense. But I'd prefer, say, 3X across the board on ALL travel (similar to the CSR), because I do spend a fair amount on hotels, Uber, train tickets, etc.
Cards:

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)
-IHG

5x on airfare on personal Platinum is official. No insurance perks (which, apparently, they once included and a few old accounts may still have). Generally expectations were much higher. The winners are generally business travelers who get reimbursed on expenses, and don't benefit from delay insurance.

I'm keeping Platinum, but this doesn't make me want to spend more on it.
