19yr old got Zync charge

Postby creditkid » Mon Jun 28, 2010 11:52 am

I wanted to help out those young people like myself who are interested in Amex charge cards like myself.
I’m 19yr old and just got approved for the Amex Zync charge card. When I turned 18 I had applied for a macy’s store card (my first credit card in my name) and got approve for $300. I fallowed my mother’s advice by only putting on the card what I could afford. After buying something I would instantly have the person who rang me up get my billing info and pay off what I just charged. Thu I always had a zero balance, which is prob why Macy’s went and increased my credit limit 7 months later from $300- $1500.
A month after getting my Macy’s card I had applied for a capital one student card (no annual fee) b/c they are eay to get for an 18yr old. I have never paid late on the card ever and always pay it off. Also only about 3 times in the last 15months of having the card ha my balance at the time of my statement coming in has my balance been over 50% of my credit limit (be sure to keep the amount of credit used on a card low, so as to help show that u are not dependent on credit).
My third credit card was from Best Buy (this past Dec.) so that iu could pay for my computer. I got $750 from them with a 3month grace period to pay off my first charge (which used all the 750 for the computer) . my mother paid that bill for me before the three months we up, thuis not showing any late payments on the account.
Basically if you want amex, payoff all of your cards on time, and don’t utilize too much of your credit given too you. If you are 18 and looking into the cards I would suggest going with an easier company and waiting a year or so then apply for their zync card which seems like the easiest for us young people to get. Just to add I had once heard location could play a factor as well, and being that I live in a suburb around Chicago that could play a factor, but idk.
Sorry for the long post but I did n want to help others. I’ve heard so many times about young people gloating about getting amex charge cards, but never really explaining how they got it. So yes it is possible for you to get one without the help of your parents (mine both got declined for the card, and other amex) good luck guys

So it has been a year and I reached my goal and upgraded to the Gold PR card. I love it, even though I know having one sadly isn't as big of a deal as it use to be 10-20 years ago, probably because everything is self-service so no one really sees people's cards anymore (and if they do they call it a debit card :( ). But I will tread on with my plans to upgrade to plat in 2 years right before my college graduation trip to Europe (I want to take advantage of the no foreign transaction fees with the plat.).
Best of luck everyone!

PS I got the card because I do like all the Amex features, the prestige would have been an added benefit to stroke my ego.

Well time for another update. My future Amex plans have somewhat changed now that I have had my gold for over a year. I would like a better return on my spending. I truly want to find value in the Amex Plat. (Which I have had an upgrade offer posted to my account for nearly a year now), but with only 1 point per dollar and really bad airline/hotel partners it would be a waste of money for me. My new six months goal includes Amex SPG and Chase Sapphire Preferred coupled with the Freedom card (use 5% bonus categories for 5% bonus Ultimate Reward points).

As always I will keep you updated on my progress.

PS I cringe at my op's grammar, spelling and overall structure  As with everything we must continue to progress.

Thanks for your advice! I turn 18 on Wednesday and I've been researching a lot before I get my first credit card by myself. I convinced my parents to get a Delta Gold Amex a few months ago which I'm an AU on. I'm trying to figure out what card I should get this week! I'm excited to have something that's really mine. I'm thinking about either Citi Forward for college students or Capital One Journey. I started a thread about my dilemma yesterday, if you'd be interested in giving me some advice. Thanks!
Gold Delta Skymiles -AU- $25k- 4/12
Citi Forward Visa- $6.1k- 8/12
Amex Gold Delta Skymiles- $3.8k- 1/13
BofA Travel Rewards Visa Sig- $5k- 1/13
Amex Blue Cash Everyday- $5k- 7/13
Barclaycard Arrival WEMC- $5k-1/14
Cap One Quicksilver Visa Sig- $10k- 4/15
