Amex Gave me two Platinum Upgrade Offers

Postby amexmember12 » Fri Jul 15, 2016 9:07 am

So over the last few weeks I have gotten two upgrade offers from AMEX, to upgrade my PRG card to their Platinum card. I have already received my $100 annual airfare credit for the PRG.

[*] Upgrade to Platinum and you can get 25,000 Membership Rewards® Points for a purchase on your card in your first 3 months. Unknown Expiration Date + $400 worth of annual airline reimbursement in the 1st year **

[*] Upgrade to Platinum and you can get 50,000 Membership Rewards® Points after I spend $5000 in 3 months. Offer Expires 7/17/2016 (In two days) + $400 worth of annual airline reimbursement in the 1st year **

**This is because the annual airline reimbursement is based on calendar year and not member year, so 2016 = $200 and 2017 = $200

If I upgrade they will give me a pro-rated refund and tack on the annual fee for the Platinum. I do believe my Global Entry is up for renewal soon so that is another bonus if i get the card.

My dilemma is that I just finished my most recent project and haven't received my next work assignment yet, so I am not sure if I will be able to hit the spend cap with just personal expenses for the $5000 offer.

If I do bite and take one of the offers I plan on testing it out for a year and then down grade to the PRG if I am not able to make use of all the benefits. My current work schedule has me traveling quite a bit now.

Any comments on the Platinum card?

Amex bonuses are lifetime now, so this would be the only MR bonus you'd be eligible on the regular Platinum card, ever. Every now and then a 100,000 MR bonus slips out (and usually with only the $3K min spend), so you should probably wait for that if you don't think you can hit the min spend for the 50K points. I got the Mercedes Benz platinum for the lifetime cap alone when they had the 75K bonus points offer. The $400 airline airfare credit is an interesting bonus, so you'll have to decide if the fewer points equal the $400 in credits. The 25K bonus is not worth it at all in my book, since you'd potentially be missing out on 75K points if/when another 100K offer drops.

The Points Guy had a breakdown of different MR redemption options, with one option of transferring 30,000 MR points for a round trip flight to Hawaii from anywhere in the US. If you're on the East Cost, that could be a large savings. More than $400, but would also require waiting for a 100K bonus to show, you hitting the min spend and transferring and redeeming the points. My hope is it's still an option next year when I fly for my honeymoon.

Given the lifetime cap, I wouldn't "try out" a platinum card without a high bonus offer (75-100,000 MR), not to mention the annual fee.

Which perks would you expect to use? Airport lounges? Hilton/SPG status? Dining reservations? FHR perks?

The credit for Global Entry isn't worth missing a lot of MRs.

I'd hold out for 100k/$3k unless you can really make great use of the perks in the near future.

You can also possibly apply for a cobrand Platinum like MB, Schwab, Ameriprise, etc.
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

SPG, Airport Lounges and car rental (National Car Rental® Emerald Club Executive) since my company uses National and Enterprise for rental.

However my main idea behind taking the upgrade was that I would avoid opening a new account, which would result in me having both the AMEX PRG and the Platinum. Taking a hit only to close the card is kinda iffy for me.

However taking the hit for 100K worth of points could be worth it. Hmmm...

This. I won't sign up for any AmEx offer that isn't absolutely stellar, since doing so makes you permanently ineligible for other offers.

Keep in mind that each variant of Platinum is considered a separate card. You can try out one and still be eligible for bonuses on the others.

For example, I only got 40k on the Schwab Platinum, but I'm still eligible for bonuses on the regular Platinum and MB Platinum.

There's also the Ameriprise version which is the only one to waive the annual fee for the first year. But since they do that, there's usually little to no sign-up bonus. There is none currently, but there was one last year for 25K MR points. I suppose if you really wanted to test Platinum out, that would be the one to go with. You get GlobalEntry/PreCheck fee refunded, as well as the $200 airline credit (which can be double-dipped to $400 in the first year). So you're at $500 in value right there since you're not getting a sign-up bonus right now. You can also add 3 additional people for no cost the first year, so they could have airline lounge access.

I'll look into that as well - thanks.

I'll hold off until my next assignment comes, in the evaluate accordingly.

So, it looks like the authorized users get their Global Entry fee refunded as well according to BoardingArea.com. So that's another $300 potentially in savings.
