Is AMEX good at approving large purchases?

Postby gregshelley@scrtc.com » Thu May 12, 2016 9:21 pm

I am getting ready to make a $5k purchase, I want to put it on my new AMEX Platinum card so I can go ahead and meet my signing bonus requirements. I have a balance of $400 on the card, when I hit the spending power button and put in $5k it says not approved, we need to verify some info please call us. I have the money in the bank and can pay the card off as soon as it post, or even send the electronic payment early if they let me. What do you think?

I've never had a charge card, so I have no experience with testing purchases on NPSL accounts, but have you tried calling them? A CSR might be able to help you. If you haven't given them any information on your assets, that might help. I'd guess since it is a new account the true, dynamic "hidden" CL will be a lot lower starting out and will grow as you establish a history on this account that is satisfactory to them. I'd call if you haven't, though.

Did you try the button once? Or several times for different amounts?

I'm not sure what information they want, but I'd definitely talk to them before you try to make a $5k purchase.

I have hit it a few times

Some people report being FR'ed shortly after playing with that thing, especially if they use it 3+ times in a day.

I would be surprised if they issued Platinum cards to anyone with an internal spending limit under $10,000. When I use the "check spending power" on my Blue Cash Everyday for something $5000 over my limit it normally says approved... but calling is the only way to know for sure.
American Express: Blue Cash Everyday (10k), Everyday, ; Discover It (7.3k) ; Target (2.1k)

Citi: Diamond (2k) ; Bank of America: Cash Rewards (2.6k) ; Capital One: Quicksilver (3k) , Sony ; Chase: Freedom (3.7k), Slate (3k), (Amazon) ; Barclay Ring ; Synchrony: Walmart MC, Amazon, Ebates

I'd call em.

They're still good here. I ran $2,700 purchase though earlier today. Done with spend on this one and looking forward to my 78K MR.

Platinum cards are generally correlated with high-spend accounts, but Platinum cards with a hard CL under $10k certainly exist. Perks are a separate consideration from spending power.

That said, the low hard CL Amex charge cards I've seen started out with NPSL, before Amex saw something it disliked.

I'm not necessarily surprised they said $5,000 wouldn't go through since OP said this was a new account. Your typical Platinum member can probably put a $5,000 charge on it no problem, but the typical Platinum member also has more history on an account AND a history of relatively higher spending compared to the average credit product.

Just be careful hitting that button too many times in a row. If you make several requests in a short period of time, Amex will flag this for potential fraud.
