Authorized user with F-1 visa?

Postby jasonfchen » Thu Apr 14, 2016 8:45 am

Hi guys, I recently applied for the Gold Premier Reward and was approved. Now I want to add my girlfriend as my AU.

Here is the thing, she is an international student on F-1 visa and does not have SSN. So will Amex be able to issue an additional card without SSN? If they do, does anyone know exactly how should I do this? She had a Citi Diamond Mastercard years ago as an AU by her father. So how would this information impact (or I doubt it wouldn't at all)?

Thanks you all for the help!

Call the number on the back of your card and ask. They want you to add another user who will spend money on your account, so if it can be done, they'll tell you what needs to be done to do it.
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

I too recently got the PRG. I was online chatting with a CSR a week ago about something unrelated. When we finished he asked if I wanted to add my wife as an AU. It was during the day, my wife was at work, and I didn't have her SSN off hand. He said thats ok I didn't need it at all.

We added her as an AU through the online chat. I didn't need to give her SSN at all. (When the question came up on the online form asking for her SSN he said just skip it.)

So I don't know if this helps, but you shouldn't have a problem not having a SSN for her.

DogDadNY518, Thanks so much for the information. I have heard that SSN would not be an issue so I will try the online chat. It's actually a little desperate for Amex to offer such thing, but hey I will take it if it works.
Amex Blue Cash Everyday - 8K
Amex Premier Rewards Gold - NPSL
Chase Sapphire Preferred - 6K
Chase Freedom Unlimited - 8K
Chase Slate - 3.5K
CITI Costco - 6.5K
Discover IT - 6.8K

Nope they never did. I called and activated it myself when it arrived. Never asked for my wifes SSN. I had some problems activating through the automated system so I had to speak to a CSR. They verified the last for of MY SSN for security when I called. That was it. They created a login for my wife for online system, set her up with a pin number and away we go. She'd used the card a few times this weekend in person and online, no problems. Never gave her SSN to Amex at all.

That's interesting. That's probably illegal, but I could be mistaken...

Do all you AMEX cardholders have a PIN? I've had my platinum for a few weeks now but haven't received a PIN number... I assume it's for cash advance, right?
