BCE Signup Bonus

Postby Kevin86475391 » Mon Dec 21, 2015 10:21 pm

I'm planning to get the BCE some time in the next 1-6 months. I've been receiving routine mailers from AMEX for the last several years, but wasn't interested in applying until fairly recently (there was always a more attractive offer from a different lender, and I only apply for a new card at most every 12-24 months) so I didn't pay close attention to the signup bonuses being offered. Naturally I want to sign up at the best bonus possible. I know it will of course vary and past history is no guarantee of future offers, but does anyone have a rough estimate of what I might hope to get as a best offer? I know I routinely saw $100 and I thought I saw $200 a few times in the past.

I'm not apping just for the bonus, but I do want to maximize it. It's not going to be a primary card...probably my 4th choice behind Discover It, Freedom, and Citi Double Cash. I'm planning to mostly use it in place of my Bank of America Cash Rewards which only offers 2% at grocery stores since the BCE offers 3%, but in all likelihood I'll use it exclusively for grocery stores. I can certainly use it more heavily the first 3 months or so to meet the spend requirement for the bonus, but wouldn't be at all interested in doing the BCP.

I *thought* there was once last year when I got an offer for a $100-$200 signup bonus plus a special spend bonus on restaurant dining for a year. That would have been ideal for me since dining out is one of my biggest spend categories, and I almost took it, but I just really wasn't interested in another new card at that point since my Citi DC was still under a year old. I may perhaps be misremembering or thinking of a different card offer though, but if that is a routine thing they offer I'd definitely want to wait for that.

I applied through a targeted offer of $250 with a locked-in APR of 12.99% after 15 months. I had received mailers for the green card and the Blue Sky before getting such a nice offer for the Blue Cash Everyday. If they send you another offer for $200 I would say you should take it.

My wife regularly gets offers for $250 after $1k spend on a BCP. Not sure if that helps you with the BCE process, but might make the BCP worth it for a year.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

In terms of a sign-up offer, my SO got the $250 for 1K spend on his BCE. But you may end up using the BCE more than you think once you get it. The reason: Amex Offers. There are presently 90+ offers available o my BCE. If you even find a small subset of those useful, it's well worth it.

If dining out is your major spend rather than groceries, I'd do the math on BCE vs. the PRG. I know it comes with a steep AF ($195), but it has no FTF and 3x points on travel and 2x on restaurants. So the calculation would have to depend on whether you can consistently get a higher than 1cpp value out of MR points, how much you travel, which of its benefits you can use, etc.

But then, on the other hand, you have a Discover card and a Freedom, which potentially covers restaurant spend for 6 months out of the year at 5% return.

How much of a difference in dollars is 1% going to be for your spend?

How much grocery spend do you have? Are you sure the BCE is the best for rewards on your spend? Have you run the numbers for your spend with the BCP, factoring in the AF?

If that's the case IMO you should be looking for a card that offers ongoing rewards that maximize rewards on your dining spend. Find ongoing rewards for your biggest spend categories where possible.

Yes make sure you calculate this. Note that even if your grocery spending were $500 a month, that extra 1% is only $5 more. $5 is $5, but that may not be a significant enough gain to warrant signing up (excluding the sign on bonus, of course).
