What should I do for 2016?

Postby MrMosby » Mon Dec 07, 2015 8:47 pm

So for 2015 I focused on -
  • Trying to spend as much on Amex (my corporate card is also an Amex so it helps)
  • Stayed at Starwood Hotels (Well I made that decision in Q2 and missed Platinum by the balance of nights I stayed at non SPG properties.. UGH)
  • Flying Delta, (because of my Geography Delta makes the most sense unfortunately)

For better or worse the three programs work great together, but now with Marriott buying SPG and the year ending in 24 short days I'm trying to decide what I should do in 2016, right now I'm thinking

  • Just wait and see and continue staying at Starwood. The Hotel attached to one of my regional offices is a Westin, and I get Gold status through Amex right now. Knowing I likely will get screwed over by Marriott later this year.
  • Start focusing on staying at Marriott knowing that their Platinum status is impossible for me to hit on an annual basis (but their Lifetime platinum may be in reach).
  • Start staying at Hilton. It appears they also have a relationship with Delta and Amex, and I also get Gold at Hilton with my Amex Platinum, and Diamond is realistically in reach.

For reference as well right now I have 170K HHonors Points, 98K Starwood Points, 115K Amex Points, 122K Delta Points

Thoughts?
Everyday Preferred $45K | Amex Platinum NPSL | Citi Hilton HHonors Reserve $45K | Delta Platinum $30K | Chase Sapphire Preferred $64K | Citi Hilton HHonors $45K | Discover IT $25K

I thought this was a more personal 2016 resolution thread. :)

I'm not intimately familiar with the rewards programs so take my pov with a grain of salt. It appears that Hilton is your best bet. Marriott would probably be better served with a Chase owned card so that would fragment your lineup. Plus you really don't know what is going to happen to Starwood. IMHO it is better to go with something you know, and have already started than go with something completely different.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

(Don't know the answer to your question, but just wanted to say that this is best formatted post I've seen! Great use of white space and bullet point....)

I'm not in HHonors. What makes the Citi cards preferable to the Amex ones? At first glance, it looks like Amex has a better earn rate. Is status much more easily achieved with Citi card spending?

The purchase isn't even complete yet, and Marriott and SPG points won't be merging that soon. You have at least a couple of years.

+1

On top of that, the CEO of Marriott announced there would be no changes to either program anytime soon. Of course they could change that without notice.

There is a lot at stake here as SPG is the gold standard for hotel programs. I would maximize it for as long as possible and if they announce a point merge or devaluation, transfer to your airline partner immediately.

I'll be coming at this from the Marriott end of things. I am really really excited for this merger. I've heard such great things about the SPG rewards and I hope those same people help make Marriott's program that much better. Not that Marriott has been lackluster in any kind of way. They have taken good care of me in the time I've been a member.
