Acceptance Abroad

Postby corys401 » Wed Nov 25, 2015 8:29 am

I was traveling in Italy for 2.5 months and then France and the UK for 3 weeks... And I cannot tell you how frustrating it was to be repeatedly told the restaurant, shop or hotel does not take American Express... I even had someone working in a coffee shop ENTHUSIASTICALLY tell me why AmEx is bad for business in front of a line of customers...

Its funny a card that bills itself as a travelers card... isn't accepted in many places.

Anyone else have similar frustrations?

Unfortunately I've not had the opportunity to travel internationally (yet). I'm curious, though: what did the coffee shop worker tell you about why Amex is so bad? Was it just because of the higher processing costs for merchants?

I think the idea is more like the luxury hotels will take your card, not necessarily the coffee shops...
Amex - BCP, Platinum, Business Gold
BoA - BankAmericard Cash Rewards
Chase - Freedom, CSP, RC, Ink Plus
Citi - DC, Prestige
Discover - It

I think in general, USA or Italy, you will have better luck with Visa/MC at the smaller shops. I brought my Amex as a backup, as most places will swipe it if the option is that or nothing.

If you plan on driving you'll need Euro's, a true chip+pin or a non chipped card to pay tolls.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

He announced they do not accept AmEx because their fees are "extortionate". They would need to sell $100 worth of merchandise to make any money of AmEx sales...

I could understand a small business owner not accepting the card... But I thought it strange to feel so passionately about it. Haha!

We unfortunately ran into instances with two hotels that didn't take our AmEx cards... They were both 4-5 stars.

Just frustrating.

I would agree that that's pretty agitating. I truthfully do understand why merchants don't want to take it. That person saying it would take $100 to make money doesn't know what they're talking about at all... Unless it would take $80 to make money with a Visa / MC...

It is what it is I suppose.

I've found AMEX acceptance to vary regionally quite a bit, even within the US. When I go to the Northwest, acceptance is quite spotty. In Oklahoma where I currently live, acceptance is fairly universal. That's wild about it not being accepted at higher end hotels, I've certainly never experienced that. Hotels generally accept the widest variety of payment methods.

Chase Freedom
Chase Sapphire Preferred
