Changing American Express cards

Postby BJP » Mon Apr 19, 2010 6:52 pm

All,

I am a current AMEX Green card customer with a positive and long (relative to my age) history with my card. I have been contemplating switching (adding) products. The ZYNC card would be a good replacement and the Clear card could be a good addition for my current situation.

Can I convince AMEX to keep previous credit history and apply it to these new products? The idea would be that when my credit report is retrieved it will show the history on my new accounts with the same data as my Green card.

In my experience...

it's no trouble converting or adding cards as long as you're in good standing with amex. i think the credit history is linked with the account number. adding a clear card would not delete your green history if you didn't close the green account, but you wouldn't transfer your history to the clear card account number, i don't think, but that may be wrong.

So, I can convert my Green card to a ZYNC card "at will" without closing or opening accounts? By doing this, I will be able to keep my account history "as is" on my credit report.

Is there any hope in having AMEX apply my Green card history to a new product such as a Clear card? ex. Say I opened my Green card in Jan 2008 and I open a Clear card tomorrow. Could I connivence AMEX to report my previous history under the new account number on my credit report?

switching American Express cards

I have an American Express Gold card and I'm more interested in the Blue Cash card. How difficult or lengthy is the conversion process? I prefer cash back to points.

you could just apply for blue and cancel gold before the annual fee kicks in. I don't know about converting from a charge card to a credit. I don;t think its possible.

I don't really want to have another hard pull on my credit. I have had too many recently.

It is my understanding that a charge card cannot be converted to a credit card. You would have to apply for Blue. Yes, it will be an inquiry on EX but the Blue would be backdated.
