Targeted Delta Gold Offer or Wait for SPG?

Postby capekid » Sat Oct 10, 2015 8:19 pm

I got a targeted offer after flying Delta recently for 50,000 Skymiles after spending $1,000 in 3 months, which is certainly easy to do. On the other hand, I really am not yearning for the benefits of that product, and Silver Status does not seem much better than simply flying Economy plus. I never check baggage even on long trips (I have Amex Platinum and usually choose Delta as my carrier of choice to use the credits).

I already opened two Chase cards this year, January, and July. I have about a week left until this offer expires. I was wondering should I take this and try to downgrade to the free Skymiles card just so I do not have to close an account.

Then I thought, since I get most of my points via Chase CSP and using Delta is very hard, should I just get an AA card in future or AMEX SPG.

Basically the question is, do I risk applying for another card right now just to get these miles? I do use Delta a lot and I prefer it. I could get some use out of those miles. Or do I give it up and just wait for something better another time.

Thanks!

Would you use the SPG points for hotels or airfare?

If you use Starpoints for hotels, the bonus is great.

If you transfer them to airlines, that may be wasteful when you already have so many options via UR and MR.
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

I have yet to use points for a hotel stay as I have found them to be too expensive in the past. I might just be better off paying cash and using my Platinum benefits with SPG Hotels. Thanks for Chase Mall and the Freedom Card I am banking UR's like crazy.

By "points" are you referring here to MRs or Starpoints?

Paying in MRs is a bad idea, but paying for rooms with Starpoints should be giving you a pretty good cent-per-point value. It doesn't change the fact that the room itself may be too expensive, though.
