No Small Business Statement Credit This Year

Postby amexmember12 » Wed Sep 30, 2015 1:07 pm

So Amex decided not to offer a statement credit for Small Business Saturday this year:

As in years past, American Express will continue to drive awareness of Small Business Saturday and encourage consumers to shop small through local and national advertising.

This year we are not offering a statement credit offer for Card Members on Small Business Saturday, but are instead increasing the support and resources we provide to help small business owners market the day within their communities and truly make it their own. Learn about the materials we make available at ShopSmall.com/GetReady:

[*]Customizable marketing materials
[*] Free online ads
[*]Shop Small merchandise kits (while supplies last)
[*] Educational event guides

We are also significantly expanding our grassroots advocacy efforts, such as the Neighborhood Champion program, to facilitate more community events and activities to engage local communities to shop small on Small Business Saturday.

You beat me to it!
I'm a bit disappointed they gone away with it this year, but I don't blame them after losing Costco contact, the court battle litigation against merchants, and the layoffs they did to help soften the blow in their bank accounts.

They sure make it sound like they're doing a lot more despite a cut that will effectively save them from paying out a ton of money. It's possible they'll put that all towards "increasing support and resources," but the cynical side of me suspects this is just corporate talk along the lines of "in order to better serve our customers, we'll no longer be offering some of the benefits to which they've become accustomed."

Disappointed I won't get a chance to use the benefit. I wasn't able to last year and now it's already gone.

Edited to add: If we still want to support small business on SBS, should we still go shopping and pay with something else to save them a bit in merchant fees?

I'm not shocked. Rewards are impermanent, and nerfing is the natural state of things.

The gourmet food store where I wanted to use most of my credits isn't there anymore, anyway. Despite good products and competitive prices, it had a bad location. Local traffic patterns meant driving out of the store's own parking lot was really tricky, and there wasn't any easy way to walk from the next-closest parking lot to the store (limited sidewalks). Most people who want gourmet food aren't looking for added driving stress!

It goes to show how you can be right in the middle of a high-traffic commercial area, but still be isolated if the little details of the location aren't just right. In fact, the store would have probably gotten more business if the area wasn't so busy and traffic was lighter!

There are targeted offers for $10 off $10+ one Shop Small transaction by 11/28. Got the offer on PRG and BCE. One $10 credit per card...not three credits like SBS last year.
