Volcanic ash means my flights cancelled - will I get my moneyback?

Postby lozontheweb » Sun Apr 18, 2010 12:10 pm

I bought a holiday on my Platinum American express card, but due to the volcanic eruption my flight is cancelled. The card came with travel insurance (as it is the platinum card). Will I get refunded my costs now the flight has been cancelled?

Thanks in advance, Laurence :)

Probably yes but it depends on the details of your situation. Sometimes the insurance expludes weather, sometimes major disasters are excluded. It actually not clear what this is, yes, a volcano...but it is the wind that is causing the problems.

I am hearing from people who have called their travel insurance provider - some are told they are covered, some are told not. At the very least people who bought tickets since last Thursday are not being covered since it is a known event.

The best thing you can do is call AMEX.

You might also be able to get refunds from the airlines and hotels. Many are waiving cancelation restrictions.
