First Month of Amex Offers

Postby Whatamuji » Sat Sep 05, 2015 2:48 am

So I've had my Hilton card for getting close to a month and I've noticed that the Amex offers I receive are for places that I've never heard of. I'd like to take advantage of them but they're mostly for places I don't shop at. Do these offers change based on my shopping with this card or does everyone get the same offers irregardless?

I really doubt they change based on your shopping. I believe everyone gets the same offer, only a few offers are targeted every now and then. They had a lot of great offers this year, but maybe these past 2 months have been lacking it. I'm patiently awaiting for more good offers as we approach holiday season.

Not everyone gets the same offers. Here's my current understanding of the rules:

1. Some offers go to every Amex-issued card, and can be added to Amex network cards issued by other banks. Most of these are unexciting, but can sometimes be good. I got $40 off $200+ at Zappos on one of these.

2. Some offers go to every card that fits one of a few card types. For example, I got $50 off $200+ at Brooks Brothers on my PRG. When I wanted the offer duplicated on EDP, too, the CSR said that particular offer only went out to PRG and Platinum (and, I'm assuming, Centurion).

3. Some offers are limited to cards that have a particular reward currency, and may be further limited. There is a recent offer for 1k bonus MRs for spending $50+ at Whole Foods. I got this on both my MR-based cards, but not on my cash-based BCE. I don't know if every MR-based card got this one or not.

4. Some can potentially show up on any card, but are targeted and somewhat scarce. These can be very useful, like $15 off $15+ at a low-margin mass retailer like Amazon or Walmart where just about anyone can find something. There are also offers that will save you up to 20%-50% at chain restaurants and gas stations, etc.

5. Some offers are really little more than ads - like a few extra reward points for high-end, high-margin fashion.

I've been able to make use of two offers from Amex. One offer was by using their service Amex Express Checkout which netted me $10 back. I also was able to use the Shoes for Crews offer I received and combined with my corporate discount I received $13 off my order if I recall correctly. I would use my Mcgraw-Hill and Reebok offers if I had need but I currently have no need for textbooks nor new tennis shoes. And if I could I'd gift you CB my coveted See Your City: Eats offer since I won't be in NYC for a very very long time. :)

Oh, I got that See Your City offer on all my cards and saved it. I may or may not end up using it.

I'm probably going to be on my own for any travel in NYC for the rest of the month, and most of the participating restaurants are pizza and sandwich places. $50 of that would be more than I could eat.

The appeal of Restaurant Week is that you can get a little taste of fine dining on a budget.

Is it always NYC or is there other cities that Amex offers?

Nice answer: Not that I've seen.

Mean answer: There's only one city in the US. Everything else is just a fairly big town. :ppp

"See your city" is an NYC thing. Amex is a big sponsor, and the offer is part of the sponsorship.

Amex does do similar offers in other cities, where they exist, and they're involved.
