Rumors about Schwab Amex details?

Postby CarefulBuilder14 » Fri Aug 28, 2015 11:53 pm

Has anyone heard or read anything about the Schwab/Amex co-brand cards, other than the fact they should be available in early 2016?

Rumors? Guesses? Predictions or prognostications?
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

There are supposed to be multiple Schwab cards, so I don't think it's going to be just one other variant of Platinum (like Amex/Morgan Stanley or Amex/Goldman Sachs).

I'm guessing that they will be cash-back cards, with maybe a bonus category for broadly-defined travel like CSP has. Maybe Priority Pass or Lounge Club for a modest AF?

I wonder if there will be some reward multiplier based on assets at Schwab, like BofA Preferred Rewards. I'm not sure how that would work when Amex pays the rewards but Schwab holds the assets.

I'm guessing it will have good ongoing rewards but an unexciting signup bonus.

I hope it isn't just a plain 1.5% or 1.75% cash back card.

It could be similar to the Fidelity Amex offered through FIA card services. 2X points per $1.
Amex PRG, Amex EveryDay, Amex BCE, Barclaycard Arrival, Cap One Venture One, CSP, Chase Freedom, Discover it, Macy's Star Card, Wells Fargo Propel 365 Amex, Wells Fargo Visa Sig

One may possibly be 2% plain cash back - but what about the other?

To justify the need for two cards with one partner, I suspect one of them will have an annual fee. But what kind of rewards/benefits might make Schwab customers be willing to pay an AF?

A 2% cash card could also steer people away from BCE, and Amex might want to avoid cannibalizing its own cards.

I will be slightly annoyed if they come out with a flat 2% card as i just got my citi doublecash.

This is good news however. Id love to have a schwab branded cc as my experience with them regarding my checking/brokerage accounts has been outstanding. Damn and i thought that the doublecash would be the last card I would need for a long time...

Possibly but a flat 2% and the BCE are very different animals. Not everyone considering a BCE is going to have a Schwab account.

In any case, I haven't really seen much on the topic but I am interested as I do have a Schwab account.

The old Schwab (which wasn't an Amex) was a flat 2% card so not sure they'd just repeat that again. I'd think it would be a different product this time. Something with travel rewards of some type (even if it's just 3% travel etc) seems likely to me.

Charles Schwab could also go the Morgan Stanley route. MS offers an Amex card that earns MR points with bonus spend categories to boot. Although Morgan Stanley account holders pay hefty account management fees.
