AMEX SPG: Lower my APR for 12 months

Postby henry » Fri Aug 21, 2015 10:57 pm

Just got an email from American Express letting me know that because of my loyalty (2 years lol) I qualify for a lower interest rate for 12 months on my Starwood Perferred Guest credit card. I never carried a balance nor do I ever intend to but just curious about this offer. Why? Why me? Because I never carry a balance? I know American Express doesn't "do" catches but I found this email a little odd. Are they trying to get me to begin carrying a balance? Do they want me to have a balance when my APR goes back up? A little sleazy for American Express's type.

How much do you use the card? If not much, maybe they think you'll value the gesture and give SPG some more spending.

Temporarily lowering APRs for PIF customers costs them nothing, and that gesture will appeal to some solvent people (irrationally).

They are hoping you use it more and take "advantage" of a lower apr than other cards. They're trying to bait you into paying a penny more than you normally do. Think about a large scale offer to a couple thousand people; a few dollars here and there turns into a lot of cash for Amex.

That's the question I use it plenty, mostly for big purchases. I put small purchases on my Everyday Preferred card. Amex gets most of my charges overall.

Then I'd say Amex is just trying to reinforce the loyalty of you and some other customers - even if only a few of the people who get that offer actually see any real value in the gesture.

This is great. Amex sent me the same offer around 9 months ago that my APR will be lowered to 6.99% for 12 months, (soon to expire in December) the problem is that I have never carried a balance on the card. Once it expire I may ask for it again to see what happen. I would rather have it and not use it, than not to have it and need it.
