Swapping intro offer for higher one

Postby Whatamuji » Sun Aug 16, 2015 10:51 pm

Has anyone had any luck upping the intro offer with AMEX. The offer I accepted from Amex was for 40k of HHonors points but then next day received a email for a higher offer of 60k. I contacted AMEX and they said they would put an investigative team on it. It sounded like lip service to me.

Ouch. Sadly, Amex is very picky about that. Your odds of switching to a better offer are slim.

I lost out on the BCE signup bonus when I used a link not intended for existing Amex customers. I've not put much spend on BCE, but have used it for offers, so I'm not too bummed out about missing the bonus.

I'm not terribly bummed out myself. But it would of been nice to get the extra 20k.

Less than a week after I applied for the ED, they sweetened the intro offer to the public (not even a targeted offer). I was given a flat-out "no" with no apologies or anything. I can't say they don't do it, but they were very inflexible with me personally. I agree it sounds like lip service, but if they'll "look into it" maybe if you stay on top of them you can get it out of them. Best of luck!

I got that "send it for research/have someone look into it" line when I requested (and didn't get) an offer.

I can't think of any case when someone on here has succeeded at improving an Amex signup bonus after applying.

Any idea as to why they wouldn't want to sweeten the pot for their customers? I mean I can understand if these were MR points. But these are Hilton points. So I don't see how it would affect them to give an extra 20k.

The short answer is, you're no longer a potential customer. There is no need to sweeten the pot for you. The have probably done a lot of market research and found that increasing an offer doesn't increase loyalty. Lets use MS99 as an example. :p
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

Was the 60k email offer directly from Amex? Or was it embedded in a Hilton email?

If I recall it was embedded in a Hilton email.

The card actually was offering 60k publicly earlier this year. Surpass was offering 80k.

It's pretty common for hotel companies to send better-than-public card offers to loyalty program members through their website or emails (at least, I've seen it for Chase IHG and Marriott). If the offer had come directly from Amex, you might have had a better position.

Amex likes big spenders. They don't want to earn interest on CC debt. They want customers to spend a lot and pay in full and on time. The card in question is not for people who spend a lot - either at Hiltons or in general. There is, after all, a higher-earning, better-perks Amex Hilton (Surpass). Your card choice may signal to them that you don't plan to use the card much.

If someone called trying to switch bonuses on a Platinum, I do have to wonder if Amex would be more flexible - especially if the customer had a history of spending on other Amex cards regularly.
