What would be considered "big spending"? Also what is your opinion on the Hilton Reserve from Citi vs. AMEX Surpass?

I can't think of any case when someone on here has succeeded at improving an Amex signup bonus after applying.

I did, for the blue sky. I got a series of targeted mailings, for (I think) $200, $250, $300 and $400 worth of points, each a week or three apart. When I got them again, I waited until I got the $400 offer again, and then applied. I got a better offer and the card in the mail the same day. I called, got the 'we'll investigate' lip service, but when the bonus posted, I got the better offer. I did not get the better intro intestest terms, though, not that I cared.

Big spending is subjective, and depends on the card. A lot of travel cards, from Amex and others (like Surpass and Reserve), don't offer certain benefits until you've spent $10k-$40k on the card in a year.

Citi Reserve has a better signup bonus, and may be a bit better with the anniversary night. Amex has their cash back offers and no AF until the second year, though.

I'm not in a rush to get any of them. I might get the Citi Reserve for the bonus, but the only one that would make any little bit of sense for me in the long run would be yours - the no-AF Amex - and then just for occasional offers and hotel stays. I rarely redeem the rewards on BCE, so it would really take a long time to accrue enough points for a hotel stay. I'd go with a more lucrative option for my 4th Amex.

If I were to get another an AF Hilton card I'd go with the Citi Reserve over the AMEX Surpass due to the reward night. And I might earn points on that 10k I'd need to spend to get the reward night so that would be a double wammy. But this would only happen after I got the IHG and CSP.

Just make sure you're not spreading your spending too thinly across different reward systems. To redeem travel rewards efficiently, you generally do need a lot of points.

Most definitely. If I were to have CSP and Hilton I'd prioritize one over the other to maximize rewards.
