Should I keep the Skymiles Platinum amex?

Postby krisko » Sat Aug 08, 2015 8:54 am

Skymiles Platinum has a $175 fee (I think) and gives me a companion certificate annually and free bags. But my girlfriend works for Delta and I'm listed as her companion ($318 r/t in biz to europe for the win!). I haven't purchased a ticket on Delta in over a year and this years cert is going unusued. Obviously things change but I don't anticipate this relationship ending soon and we may get married in a year or two.

Is there any coherent reason to keep this card? The cards I use now are Chase sapphire, Amex BCP, and Sams Club MC. Thanks.

You lucky, lucky dog you. But to answer your question, I don't see any reason to keep a card that has a $175 annual fee attached to it. And since you yourself say you don't use the card that should be even more reason to get rid of it.
Kohls: $300, Discover IT: $1.8k, Capital One Quicksilver: $2k, Amazon Store Card: $2.2k, Chase Freedom Unlimited: 3.2k, AMEX HHonors 5k

I noticed the annual fee was charged a week ago so I called to cancel the card. She was able to convert it to a Hilton card while keeping the same card number. Feels weird canceling the skymiles card, I've had one forever.

Did you get a partial AF refund? AFAIK, there are only two Hilton Amex cards. One has a $75 AF, and one no AF.

I can confirm there's only 2 Hilton cards for AMEX.

I got a full refund even though I already paid the balance. She said you can get a refund if you cancel within the first few weeks of getting the fee.

I'm thinking I should've asked for some kind of HHonors points. I could've applied for a new Hhonors and gotten a bonus.

Well, signup/PC/retention bonuses are a very YMMV area, but I don't think you'd have gotten anything. PC bonuses are more common when there is an upgrade on the card, which usually means a higher AF. If I upgraded my PRG to a Platinum, I would probably get some extra MRs. I don't see how a $175 AF replaced by $75 or $0 could be considered an upgrade.

Yes, a new account usually means a bigger bonus. It also means a lower AAoA, an inquiry, etc. Amex knows that a new account entails a temporary cost in creditworthiness for you, whereas a PC has no such cost.
