Amex cli new rules?

Postby Vermonster » Tue Jul 21, 2015 11:42 pm

So today is my 62nd day and I figured I should go for the 3x cli to help offset maxing out my Double Cash paying for college. Simple enough go online, request $18k, enter income, click submit. It says, "We're sorry but you are only approved for up to $12,400." It offered me the choice to accept new credit line, or keep my old one. Easy choice, I accept. Then there is a hiccup and I'm given a 7-10 message. I thought I was just approved for $12,400?? So I go to look again to see what the message was after I asked for $18k and stupid me hits submit again and am given another 7-10 day message. But I also instantly get an email saying "we made a decision, check it online now." The only thing it showed me was my initial card application, nothing about a cli.

So I do the web chat (didn't want to wake the wife) and after the CSR told me that my request was being processed, he then told me that I would be declined because I had received a cli in the previous 6 months. I told him I've only had the card since 5/20, and he said, "yes, I see. So you must wait 6 months after opening your card to request your first cli." He couldn't really tell me much more, other than to call a number tomorrow.

I'm wondering if the counter offer is a normal way of doing things or this is going to be a decline. And what's with "6 months after opening?" I guess I'll watch MF and see if a shit storm brews.

My recent experience:
Friday night: Had $4,500 CL, requested a new CL of $10k. Got 7-10 day message. My account was about 80 days old, and it was my first CLI request from Amex on any card. My balance at the time on EDP was about $500.
Monday: Had an online chat with CSR and asked if they needed any records. CSR told me it was still pending so there was really no update.
Wednesday morning (today): The Amex website showed my available credit (CL less balance and pending transactions) of about $9,500.

Your second request probably did confuse their system.
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

I just checked again before replying and I was granted the new $12,400 credit line. So I think it is safe to assume that CSR Kody has no clue what he is talking about. I also doubt his name really is Kody...

But between you and me It looks like Amex is countering a lot of cli requests. It's probably safe to say the 3x cli gravy train has pumped the brakes.

Well, having a non-toy limit more than double after 2 months is still pretty good, even if you didn't get the full 3x. What's your spending on the card been like? I've been hitting 30+ EDP transactions consistently, even though most transactions are small. I've only used my BCE for small offers lately, so a CLD on that would not surprise me.

Oh I'm very happy with the 12.4k, it totals the rest of my cards.

Spending is mostly gas and grocery. But gas will go on the freedom for a bit. I think I only ran about 800 through it in 61 days. I wanted to have a $0 balance when I asked for the cli so I have been holding back on some purchases.

Well, this is depressing. I always thought AMex was where the party's at. I'll still go fore the BCP, but I wanted a juggernaut cash back card d*mnit. Thanks for the heads up though.

3x never indicated what one would get. It was limit and exceeding that would lead to an instant denial but they changed a long time ago to counter offering. The CLI that one qualifies for will always depend on credit and income so it's difficult determining trends without sufficient sample data and you have to consider your sources (i.e. if you're relying on feedback from those building/rebuilding then consider the shape that their credit is in). It is possible that they are tightening up their requirements but it's also possible that a lot of people posting recently just aren't clearing the bar as cleanly.

They won't CLD for that reason alone.
