Shared AMEX. Need help understanding maintaining activity

Postby rwockenf » Thu Jun 18, 2015 9:10 am

We recently transferred our balance from our higher interest rate AMEX. Now that the AMEX is $0 balance, I plan on attaching a monthly bill to it and autopaying it off every month to maintain activity. I share the card with my girlfriend. We put her card in the safe and don't use it currently. My question is:

Does she need to use her card regularly to maintain an "active" status or because we are on the same account (even though there are different card numbers) will my activity count for both of us? If so, can I freeze her card without expecting any issues from AMEX?

I want the Utilization Rate to benefit her credit but want to be sure about the need for her to use her actual card.

Thanks very much for any answers you can give me.

If your girlfriend is an authorized user, I don't think you need activity on each card for the same account to remain active. Activity on either car will do.

Is it common for Amex to give different card numbers to AUs? I only ask because Chase gave us the same number, but I'm not sure if that was because we are now joint card owners.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

No. Minimum activity is per account -- not per card.

Not just common but standard. AmEx allows the account holder to restrict the amount of credit available to each AU and to track spend by user. This requires different card numbers.
