Using Amex Overall

Postby dfm990 » Fri Jun 12, 2015 11:39 pm

Hey guys, I have two Amex cards, a Gold and a BCP. I was wondering, my second 6 month 3x CLI opportunity is coming up on July 13th and i was wondering, i haven't paid off my EDP completely its at about 50% utilization right now, and about to go to about 35% by the end of this billing statement. will i still probably get the bump up (from 3k to 9k)? I still use Amex a lot overall but more on the gold side, about 4k-9k a month and pay it off on time obviously... Does that good Amex history with the gold card factor in to the CLI decision on the BCP at all?

I've always paid in full, and never tried the 3x CLI, but a lot of people have reported that Amex dislikes it when you don't PIF.

Just because they give you an intro 0% period doesn't mean they actually want you to take advantage of it. They want you to spend a lot and pay in full and on time, so they make their money from processing fees. Discover, by contrast, is generally happy to make a lot of their money from interest from people who can't (or just don't) PIF.

Wow it would kinda suck if I get denied a CLI just for carrying a balance for a bit... :(

I wonder if I'd have more luck online or through a phone rep when the time comes.

From my experience with AMEX, I have always PIF. From what I seen, I have to echo what others have said and that you need to PIF. So pay that down a bit if you can and make sure your utilization is less than <9%.

Well, I'll see what happens when that day reaches us... If I decide to do it that day, I'll probably go the phone route and plead my case and mention the heavy gold card usage and prompt payments on it. Idk if that'll help but I'll see I guess. I will update at that point.

No idea. Your entire credit profile and income matter and even if we had all that information we would still just be guessing. If you want the best possible odds then I'd suggest getting your utilization down. CLI's with a balance are certainly possible. I've received all of my CLI's with balances but they were always under 30%. Worst case you get denied and try again in 90 days. If you qualify for less than 3x they'll counteroffer.

Again, it's based on credit and income. How you request it does not change either.
