I didn't really expect it to be honored, but don't promise

Postby MemberSince99 » Wed May 27, 2015 1:11 pm

Last September after I bought a house, I was surprised to get a letter from Amex. It said that I should have gotten points that I did not receive and that I would be receiving them shortly.

I thought I don't know of any points I should have gotten and didn't. I didn't really believe them because I know what sticklers they are.

Sure enough I never got an extra points award, but since I didn't expect to, no biggie. BUT I will say this - Amex, you really should not be sending out letters like that. They do you NO good - when you don't come through with the promised points (because they aren't really earned anyway) it just isn't going to make your customers think more highly of you. They'll just think you are as big of idiots as your offshore support team is and that the brand and company as a whole is really going to hell.

I threw the letter away, and even if I had it, I wouldn't insist they credit me - all i ask is please refrain from this sort of thing in the future for best customer relations. Thanks Amex if you read this and actually do anything to see that happens.

To me, it seems all AmEx can do these days is dig their hole deeper. Their customer service is a joke, their new card offerings are laughable and their affection for FR is borderline psychotic. Not to mention they are losing two big name cobranding partners. They are turning themselves into the BlackBerry and AOL of credit cards. (BB and AOL were once the powerhouse companies in their respective fields of business, now look at them both.)

I still like Amex, but I have to say a lot of what I've seen lately doesn't make me want to use my Amex cards. Hopefully they get things turned around. Some suggestions would be bring the customer service back to the US - when you are paying a premium fee for a supposedly premium card, how can I take that seriously when I call you and get connected to Punjab who I can hardly understand and he can barely understand me, and who screws up the simple things I request? If I call CSP which by the way has a far lower annual fee even than Gold, I don't spend time in voice mail hell before I talk with Punjab, I get an American who answers the phone. Imagine that.

Next work on getting more Amex acceptance. In the past I've tried a number of times to use Amex cards but they simply weren't accepted.

Then bring back backdating. It was probably the best perk of being an Amex customer, and for all the money you pay them in fees, you have the right to expect SOMETHING for that.

Last suggestion - next card you bring out, make it a SERIOUS card, and not something that looks like a 5 year old drew it in crayons. Who the hell is going to want to hand that to a cashier? And the rewards were far less than impressive, although granted there is no annual fee.

I have two Amex cards - the Costco TE and the BCE (recently acquired in anticipation of the Costco one going away) - and Amex is still the best issuer as far as I am concerned. I have not experienced any worsening of their customer service, and although they are losing Costco, the hit will be one-time. Amex is changing and adapting, but I don't want them to give up their high standards for lending. In the financial arena, careful lenders (and careful borrowers) tend to win the long term even if they don't always have the best bonus or rewards offer of the day.

You're not everyone and you can't speak for all AmEx customers -- just yourself. I appreciate such actions myself though I should have been tracking and verifying my rewards instead of being surprised by the letter. Companies make mistakes. I'd rather deal with those that can at least admit to them and address the mistake. If you don't care for them for whatever reason(s) that's fair. Don't use them. If enough people stop using them they'll certainly get the message.

I'm not really arguing for or against AmEx, just pointing out that there is a massive difference between
They'll just think you are as big of idiots as your offshore support team is and that the brand and company as a whole is really going to hell.

There are certainly those that agree with you but those of you do not speak for the rest of us.

Ok, if you could provide me with some concrete examples of OTHER people (remember, we cannot simply base this on our OWN feelings) who actually enjoy getting letters like this, then please feel free to pass that info on to Amex and ask them to send them the same letter.

I mean what a ridiculous argument. That's like saying I'm not speaking for ALL of us if I say that it sucks to get kicked in the nuts. Ok, can you think of anyone who ENJOYS getting kicked in the balls? There probably are a couple of freaks out there who do, but it's pretty safe to say most people wouldn't enjoy it.

If you are one of those people who enjoys getting fake point award letters by all means, go right ahead and ask Amex to send you one. Or just make one in Word or something, if it makes you feel better. Or maybe if you're lucky they'll send you one and you'll have one too. You won't get the points, but then maybe you don't really care about that.

I wish that just once, just once, I could read something of substance in your posts. Granted not all of mine are the deepest - I do express opinions and not everyone is going to agree with them (as you usually do not obviously). But I'd LOVE to see you actually put out a meaningful, well thought out, USEFUL post. You're just really a step above the "Congrats +1" category. Anyone and I mean anyone can sit there and say "Your single expreience is not the same experience that all of humanity that ever existed had" and "there is more to credit than your score". Really, who would have ever guessed. Feel free to prove me wrong and make a meaningful contribution in your posts - and "your opinion is not the opinion of everyone alive, dead or yet to live" isn't that in my opinion, but again there are people who are dead who would disagree with me. Maybe they died of boredom reading your posts.

I've gotten two or three of those letters over the past few years. Sadly I don't track my points that closely so I don't know if I ever received the credit or not. I guess I could just review all my statements and see if points were credited...

Yea, once Amex dropped backdating I lost interest in them. None of their cards provide me any benefit over my current ones that I can see. I think when the time comes my Costco TE will be closed and I will not get a new Amex. They even sent me a offer for the BCE card, I laughed when I saw it since my SM card gives me better benefits on their two big categories. The only good thing that has happened with them is they gave me a SP CLI of $800 to $6500 the other day.
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $6,000
Chase Sapphire Reserve - $19,500
Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

FICOs: Discover (777), SallieMae (764), Amex (767), Citi (772)
FAKOs: CK- TU (760), EQ (760)

I should get that SM card too. I spend >$10k a year on groceries so I always max out my BCP at 6%. If I used that SM for the first $250 I would do better in the long run. Luckily there is no cap on the 3% for gas...

So you got a letter saying you're going to receive points that you never earned. And then they rightfully didnt credit you with the points, you get upset? They made a mistake and they were never your points to begin with!
I dont see the big deal. You're upset for not getting points you never earned.......
