Is Amex Serious with Plenti?!

Postby swipe_masta » Sat May 16, 2015 11:11 pm

I don't know if any of you guys have noticed that Amex has a new card out- Plenti... As in there is plenty room for improvement! I was only alerted to it cause I have a Macy's Amex card and I guess they are trying to promote it. The "rewards" if you can call it that, are very lackluster, but I think the main focus is that the Plenti card itself is used more as a rewards card in conjunction with your other card(s) rather than as a credit card itself.

My understanding of it is that it links with your Macy's card and if you use your Macy's card you get 1pt/$1 whereas you would get 1pt/$10 spent with another card... Nothing special at all! Also, the list of partners only has like five companies. Is Amex serious with this card? They couldn't think of anything else? At first I thought they resurrected the unicorn in another branding, but sadly it's just crap.

There are other threads on here that talk about it. It was discussed that the Plenti may be designed as an entry level Amex card for those people who cannot get one of the nicer ones. If you look at it that way it makes sense that the rewards are not that great.
Discover IT - $5,700
Chase Freedom - $5,700
Costco Citi - $13,000
Sallie Mae - $4,000
Chase Sapphire Preferred - $6,000
Chase Sapphire Reserve - $19,500
Citi Double Cash - $6,500
Amex BCE - $13,000

FICOs: Discover (777), SallieMae (764), Amex (767), Citi (772)
FAKOs: CK- TU (760), EQ (760)

One of the great mysteries of life (as far as credit cards) that I'll probably never "get" is why they killled the Zync.

I mean I suppose maybe the default rate was higher than they wanted to see and it just wasn't profitable and they just decided they didn't want that market sgement. Who knows.

I still wish I had kept mine. If I had known they were going to get rid of it, I would have. Oh well highsight is 20/20.

Yeah I'm really kicking myself for not picking that up when I had the chance. Also because I would have heard about the ending of backdating, and picked up a BCP long ago. Not that it really matters, but it would have been nice to have those 2 accounts reporting for 2 years now.

The more I look at Plenti, the more it looks like the JetBlue card. You get most of your benefits from being a member of the rewards program. The card offers minimal bonuses above and beyond the rewards program. The whole Plenti program is aimed at the initial bonuses. After that it is not much more than a multi-corporation spending tracker.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

Macy's was plastered with Plenti advertisements when I was there a couple days ago.

The person in front of me at the register, when asked if they'd like to sign up for a Macy's card and save x%, asked the cashier if the Macy's rewards program was getting replaced by the Plenti program. Cashier said, "I don't know, I think that's a different thing."

Thought about piping up, but then I realized neither party would actually care.

-Capital One Quicksilver
-Barclaycard Arrival (no AF)
- US Bank (no rewards)

I tried to use a chipped EDP at Mobil (a Plenti partner) and the pump couldn't read the card. The attendant said the pumps were having problems with Amex. It was a small transaction, so I threw it to Discover which had been sitting idle for a while. SM has been SD'ed and will probably remain so.

Of course, there were Plenti ads all over the place...not that anyone could actually use a Plenti CC that day.
