When to upgrade to Gold PR

Postby capekid » Mon May 04, 2015 6:37 pm

With the great changes that are happening to Gold PR card in June, when is a good time to upgrade/apply. I have had a Green Card for 2 years now and am in good standing with them. I have been getting emails and now an impressive mailing with Platinum offers (25,000 for upgrading, no spending min.).

I am not dead set on getting Platinum. I would like to get the Gold PR (that would actually be useful). And if you saw my other thread, I really would like that Chase SP. My current credit score is 794 with a $70,000 income and I am 23.

If you upgrade now to PRG, you should be able to get the $175 AF for the first year, instead of $195. If you apply for PRG as a new account, you should get the AF waived the first year.

Of course, a good bonus at the right time makes the $20 difference a trivial matter. That $20 only applies for the first year - everyone will be paying $195 soon. I got PRG in May 2014, so just barely squeeze in for the $175 this year.

25k MRs to upgrade to Platinum is low. I'd hold out for something better. 40k is more reasonable. See what bonus you can get to PC to PRG, as well as to apply for PRG as a new account.

You should have no problem going for the Platinum card. I had my delta amex for two years and just received my platinum card last week. However I do like the gold card rewards.
CARDS:
Capital One Platinum (2001) |Capital One QuickSilver World (2002) | Amex Gold Delta (2013) | Best Buy Visa (2013) |Discover It (2015) | Amex Platinum (2015)

Gardening Since: June, 2015

Next Cards:
Personal: Chase Freedom Unlimited

Does upgrading the "product" effect my credit score? Or, no because it just a fee and rewards change but the rules are the same because it is a charge card?

There should be no change to your credit score. As you said, it's just a change in fees/perks/rewards within one account.
