AmEx Product Change Options after Y1

Postby jake247 » Thu Apr 23, 2015 9:47 am

Hi all. So here is my situation. It’s my understanding that after 1 year of enrollment with my green card I will be able to product change up for a gold or platinum. Being that it is only a soft pull on my credit, im going to hold out until June (month 13 of enrolment for me) to see what my options are. I spoke with AmEx the other day and they told me they can’t tell me whether I’ll be eligible for a gold or platinum until I hit month thirteen.

My credit has remained in excellent condition and I typically spend about $1,200/mo on the card and have racked up about 16.5k points since I’ve enrolled back in May ’14. My question to you is how do they evaluate whether I’ll be eligible to product change for a Platinum or not? Thanks for your help.

It's based on your annual spend and credit score. If you've been good with the Green you should have no problem updating to Gold and maybe Plat. If you have an online account, you should be able to see any offer available to you when you click on the Benefits section.

thanks for the tip. so when i go online and i click benefits, on the top right of the benefits screen and to the right of my green card icon, i click 'see other cards'. Menu pops in from the right side of the screen and shows 'My card's' where my green card is located. Below that is shows 'Recommended Card's' and shows the Platinum Card. is that the area you're talking about? Also, if the Platinum Card is there under the 'recommended cards' section, does that mean i'm eligible for a PC now? Seems like my chances to PC for a plat on mo 13 are good then. Thoughts? Thanks.

When you click on Benefits, it'll show a list of all the benefits. But there's 3 little boxes directly under the picture of your card that says Benefits(20), Offers(1), Bookmarks(0).

If you do have an offer and click on it, then you'll see like "You're Pre-Selected for Platinum.. Apply to upgrade to Platinum and you can earn 50,000 Membership Rewards Points etc".
Sometimes on the big picture of your card, it will slide to another picture and says you're Pre-Approved for the PRG for example and there's an 'Apply Now' button. However i would be wary to click on that since there is no mention of any signup bonus.

If you dont see either of those, you can call after a year or just before and ask about a retention bonus or upgrading to a Gold or Plat. They'll tell you if you qualify and the signup bonuses available...

interesting. thanks for the heads up. I think my strategy is going to be PC to gold and then lay and wait for one of those 100k offers for the plat and app for it. do you know of anywhere on the net where i could set up an alert for when that offer becomes available. i know it was around a few months ago back in January but i missed it...

Are PC options are based on spending on the card you want to PC? Or spending across all Amex cards?

I could possibly want to PC PRG to Platinum sometime, although my EDP would get much more total spending. Of course, an app for a new account wouldn't be so bad.
Love: IHG, Platinum, Sallie Mae, AA Plat, CSP
Like: Discover, ED, BCE, Hyatt, Arrival, Freedom
Might drop: BrooksBros, Prestige (Costco PC?)
Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold
Letting new accounts cool off since May
Really not sure what I'll add next or when

I would ask the CSR if you can PC from PRG to Plat and still get the signup bonus of 50k pts. Would be a shame to miss out on that. If your payment record and balances with amex are good, you will have no problem PC'ing. It's more the bonus you'd be foregoing.
