Amex BCP Offer -- not available to current Amex holders?

Postby MooseMom » Tue Apr 21, 2015 1:28 pm

Hello all. I'll get right to my question --- (hope you don't find that rude, considering I'm a new member and this is my first post.)

From the Amex terms and conditions:

"If we identify you as currently having an American Express® Card account, you may not be eligible for this welcome bonus offer. This offer is also not available to applicants who have or have had this product."

I used to have the Amex Blue (from maybe 5 years ago) and currently using Amex Costco. Would you know if I will not be eligible for the welcome bonus offer? I chatted with an Amex rep earlier and she was not very helpful. She just gave me a bunch of canned advertising responses on how easy it is to earn rewards, etc.

When I clicked on the "Apply" button link from this site, from my iphone which is tied to my Amex Costco (Apple Pay), it gave me this message:

"You have been identified as a current American Express Card Member. You may have seen an offer advertised for this product previously, but the offer is not available to current American Express Card Members."

... and the 0% APR is only for 6 months. Unlike the offer I see from the pc, which is 15 months.

The rep I chatted with said if I did not have the exact Amex BCP card, I should be eligible for the offer. Any one know for sure?

Thanks in advance.

Amex uses that disclaimer so that it can be up to their discretion to give you the sign up bonus or not. As an example I got the Blue Cash card in summer 2013 when they were doing 0 interest and $100 cash back. I canceled by blue cash and picked up the delta amex in Jan 15 and got that bonus as well, a little under two years later. I then decided to get a PRG and I am not eligible for the 25k membership rewards bonus. Didn't bother me, because they just gave me 35k sky miles two months before getting the PRG.

IMO I think they do that so you don't jump from amex to amex to get bonuses.

I agree. I think it is to thwart MS and app sprees. They can always fall back on the legal wording if needed.
Chase Freedom $9k~~Chase Sapphire Preferred $6.5k~~Amex Blue Cash Preferred $12.4k~~Citi Double Cash $4.7k

Thanks for the responses.
I called Amex rep and he confirmed that I will be ineligible for the offer ONLY if I had that same card previously. He said he can give me the offer ($150 cash back and 15 months 0% APR) right there and then if I continued my application with him on the phone.

FYI, has nothing to do with ApplePay. It's a matter of cookies.
