Re-opened Costco Amex today, but will it backdate?

Postby TheLethargicAge » Wed Apr 15, 2015 1:55 pm

I opened a Costco TE Amex in January of this year for the backdating and ended up closing it last month. Called today to try to get re-opened and to my surprise Amex agreed to reinstate the account. Now, the account opening date on my CR was January 2004. I wonder if it'll be the same when it reports again to the CRAs?

Did they give you any specific timeline as to when you could reopen your account like a 90 day period?

I'd imagine that everything would be the same if you reopened the same account but it'd be an interesting experiment to see what happens.

Actually, they didn't give me a time frame; however, the account was closed less than 90 days ago. Citi, on the other hand, did mention that accounts closed in the last 90 days could be reopened.

I called Amex's credit reporting department and asked if the status of the account (open vs closed) would be the only change that would be reported, and they said yes. Opening date, history, etc, would remain the same.

That's good, especially with it being re-opened within 90 days. If they wouldn't have just "turned the switch back on", that would be a little ridiculous.

Wait I may have this wrong but didn't Costco sever their ties with Amex?? How can they offer you a Costco Amex when that relationship is over?

The switch from Amex to Visa is set for 3/31/2016 in the USA. It's still Amex until then.
Warranties and sketchy merchants: Schwab Platinum
Price rewind: Costco
Travel insurance: Prestige, CSP
Perks: IHG, Hyatt
Rewards/Offers: Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE
Taxes/Misc: SPG

Limited value, might close: Arrival

Might add: First Tech, proper business card

Good to know!

Here in Canada they went with Capital One Mastercard. YUCK.

I guess I am able to still go to the USA and use my Amex at Costco!

So did you end up loading up on Costco gift cards? You pay with cash now? Last I was aware, you only used Cent and CSP - neither of which, of course, is a MasterCard.

LOL yes I loaded up with cash cards. So many at high amounts it didn't take long for them to realize what I was doing

It's legal though. Nothing wrong with that :)
