Retention bonuses may be trickier to get with the card's upcoming changes, though.

Im not really worried a ton about getting baller rewards, but more getting the card while im young so it can be a card I hold on to for a very long time.
Amazon Store - $6,000 (1/14)
Discover it Student - $2,000 (2/15)
AMEX Everyday - $4,100 (3/15)
Citi DC - $1,500 (7/15)
Best Buy Visa - $1,000 (9/15)
Carson's Store Card - $250 (7/16)
Macy's Store Card - $600 (11/16)

Are you familiar with backdating?

http://creditcardforum.com/american-express/9203-what-advantage-backdating.html
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

No, not until I just read that thread! Very intriguing.

Yeah -- you don't need to worry about holding on to an AmEx. You just want to establish membership as soon as possible.

IMO one should always run the numbers for one's spend when considering cards. When looking at points/miles systems one also needs to look at redemptions and how they impact value per point/mile.

As far as I understand, the regular Gold (not PRG) is getting no extra benefits at all. It was even nerfed a few months ago by losing the top Amex roadside assistance tier.

The regular Gold really is a remarkably awful deal. Most people who have it, it seems, just like to have something shiny that says 'American Express' on it. Ignoring image factors and just looking at the value a card offers, most people would be best off dropping the card or paying the extra money for a PRG or Platinum.
