I will dump my AmEx cards this summer too, right before my AFs are due. Going to transfer out my points to Delta (most likely) and get a Citi Prestige. all other premium travel cards out there is getting better while AmEx is getting worse.

there are no bonus categories on the platinum card. MR points are not worth f**king s**t unless you transfer them to a partner. out of their 20+ partners only 3 are good. jetblue, BA and Delta. the others are trash.

with citi prestige, points are worth 33% more when redeemed for travel on ANY airline. or 60% more when used for American or US airways, who fly pretty much everywhere. Citi Prestige also has bonus categories.

Chase has bonus categories galore plus a bonus points mall!! and points get an extra 20% value when used towards travel. My Ink Bold picks up 200k points a year just for buying supplies and paying bills for my business. with AmEx I'd be lucky to pick up 70k with the same spending. all for a measly $95 a year.

even the VISA black card caught up and surpassed the platinum! they now have Priority pass select for lounges. and each point is worth 2 cents instead of 0.8 cents when redeeming for travel purchases via travel agents. plus it's a VISA card which means merchants actually take it.

AmEx can stick their stupid twitter $10 rebates up their cracks. no one has time for that crap. i'm taking my personal 100K+ a year in spending to Citi. Business spending will stay with chase.
Junk I use:
AmEx Platinum for Mercedes Benz from, 75k spending ability
AmEx Everyday 8.99% + Prime, 44k CL
Chase Ink Bold, 35k
Chase Freedom (Converted from WaMu VISA) from '07, 5.99% + Prime, 30k CL

Junk I don't use
BoA Susan G. Komen Cash Rewards (converted from World Points MC) from '07, 7.9% Fixed APR, 30k CL
Discover IT (Converted from Discover More) from '08, 5.74% + Prime, 20k CL
AmEx Clear from '07, 4.99% + Prime, 10k CL
All 3 credit scores are over 800.

I don't quite understand this. Is the "33% more" like the 25% more that the CSP offers when paying with TYP/UR points in a cash-like manner? Or is it a bonus when transferring points to FF programs that become miles? What about the 60%?
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May

I liked the points that I've gotten, especially from that PRG sign up bonus, but I was completely ignorant about how costly change fees could be with Delta and how Amex Travel wasn't really that helpful at all there. I still have tons of other points and some airline gift cards but I felt horrible having to cancel that particular flight and losing points in the process. It was my mistake and I should have been more aware of these things but knowing that these points really aren't too useful outside of those partners like Delta (who I already don't like that much at all, I went on a Southwest flight though and was highly impressed and will be converting my Ritz Carlton points to 50k Southwest Airline miles). More reasons as to why Chase and even Discover are getting most of my spend now.

I kept hearing Visa Black card was useless but I'm definitely gonna look into that in the future and see if they'll waive the fee the first year. Likewise with Citi Prestige.

any reason particular you don't like delta?

no airlines has knocked me off my feet but deltas pretty good; and they got new planes in rotation (or maybe I never booked a domestic with one before) since the virgin atlantic partnership--plus there is air france and klm

when United canceled their flights from nyc to west coast due to snow; a lot of the folks who got onto my flight that was later canceled and we were redirected to another delta flight a few hours later..eventually got off the air same day while United wouldn't fly at all.

Another time United canceled my flight due to "weather" which was light rain and I had to stay overnight

CSP bonus is 20%, not 25%. and yes, it works the same way. points are worth 1.33 or 1.60 cents a point in the above mentioned categories rather than amex's 0.8 cents a point or other company's 1 cent a point

check out this image to see how worthless AmEx points are:

CSP has a 20% reduction in the number of points needed. You buy $100 of travel with $80 of points. You get $20 extra when spending $80, so each point goes 25% further, not 20%.

I agree that Amex doesn't have too many attractive products. I really like the backdating though, so I'll always keep one no annual fee card open in the sock drawer.

oh, right. so my point still stands. AmEx points are worth less than dental floss at a willie nelson concert.

I had no idea even just having over 6000 UR points with Chase could be worth plenty in itself. I was looking at the travel portion of the website and the number of points I have right now already equals around $87 if I were to use them on a flight. I'm really impressed with the redemption value and much more so with what Amex has to offer in that regard.

I can't imagine how much 55-60k UR points would be worth if I were to redeem them for travel and I'm about halfway done with meeting the bonus right now on the card so I think about next month or May I'll have it completely met at the rate I'm going. I did a rough estimate and it comes out to around $783 worth.

Chase Freedom is also looking more and more attractive to me now too to the point where Discover It might be back in the SD for a long time. I recently applied for it and unlike in the past where I've gotten denied for it, it's in verification right now.

I suppose this is true for the occasional novice traveller simply redeeming points for cash value towards travel. But if you transfer the points out to partners, then you can get significantly more value since mile redemption costs aren't linked to ticket cost.
