College Student Approved for Gold

Postby JMR » Mon Mar 02, 2015 12:18 pm

Just approved for Amex Gold with 1 year of credit history. Discover FICO score of 702. Pretty cool to get in the door with Amex. The only thing is about Gold is I'm not sure if PRG is worth the extra $50 to me or if I should of just went for Green.
Citi AAdvantage Platinum Select- $5000 (3/15)
American Express Gold- NPSL (3/15)
Chase Freedom- $1200 (3/15)
Nordstrom- $1500 (9/14)
Discover IT- $1000 (2/14)

TCL: $8700

FICO (TU)- 716 (3/15)

If you come across that 50k MR point, $1k spend sign up bonus for the PRG somewhere, go for it. The AF is waived for the first year so you could downgrade to the Green by that time or have it cancelled. Sometimes they give out retention bonuses too.

You shouldn't have an issue getting a revolver in about two or three months. I'd even go for one now if there's anything you want. Same HP if you do it early enough.

Should have taken PRG instead. It's worth the $50 if you spend a lot on gas and grocery. Also, the PRG has better sign up offer and sometimes give public 50k points offers.

The Gold offers not too much than the Green. With the Gold ,you might get a few benefits which you never use, as well as the double points on travel (with exceptions) paid on amextravel.com only.

On the contrary, PRG offers 2x on grocery and gas station, and 3x for airfare booked directly from airline companies. However, if you prefer paying less fee, you might consider and Everyday card ($0) or Everyday Preferred ($95), both of which could effectively beat the Green card, and maybe Gold as well.
Citi Forward Visa $5000 10/2012 | American Express Blue Cash Everyday $8000 2/2014 | Discover it $7000 5/2014
Chase Freedom Visa Signature $7000 6/2014 | Citi ThankYou Premier Visa Signature $5000 1/2015
All EMV.

Couldn't have said it better myself.

I agree with the others. Green and Gold used to offer a more reasonable value, but now you're probably best off with the PRG or Platinum (spending more to get more benefits) or getting something other than a charge card.
Very useful: SchwabPlat, CSP, IHG, Costco (was AA Plat), Freedom, SPG, Prestige (retention)
Somewhat useful: Discover, ED (was EDP), BCE, Hyatt
SD with activity alerts, might close: Arrival

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech, BofA Travel PH, Aviator Red

Since I already have the Gold, how would I go about upgrading to the PRG and still get the 50k bonus?

I think the 50k MR for $1k spend offer is invitation-only. When I got that offer it was through the mail. I don't know if there's a web link somewhere that offers it to anyone. I'd suggest calling Amex, explaining your situation, and seeing what they can offer.

I don't like your odds of a 'perfect outcome' of switching to PRG, getting the offer and AF waived for a year, and not having to open a new account. You may have to compromise in one way or another, but maybe you'll get what you want.

Congrats.

I also got my AMEX Gold Rewards card as a 19 year old college sophomore. Then later upgraded to the PRG.

Always run the numbers for your spend and consider any sign up bonuses any time you're considering any card.

Great advice, I was more just throwing out an app to see if I would get it which was a mistake on my part.
