Apply for Plat or Gold Delta?

Postby brantb24 » Fri Feb 20, 2015 11:24 am

If you apply for Plat Delta will they review for Gold Delta if you are denied? I feel like I may be borderline for approval (Experian of 712). I fly enought that the Plat sounds like the better card.

Thanks!

Why did they decline you last time? In your last thread, you mentioned "trouble" in your credit history. Amex can be less forgiving about a bad history than the FICO formula is.
Keeping indefinitely: IHG, SchwabPlat, CSP, Discover, Freedom, ED, BCE, Hyatt
May close or PC: Prestige, Arrival, BrooksBros
AA Platinum converting into Costco

Might add: Proper business card, CSR, Ritz, Delta Gold, First Tech
Letting new accounts cool off since May

I never had a bad history with AMEX. But, I did have some hiccups over 10 years ago with some other lenders (one was settled--shows as paid judgement on only 1 credit report-Equifax). But, the only blips I have now are limited credit (1 card I just got as mentioned before) and a late payment on auto loan 2 years ago.

If I recall correctly, about 6 months ago they declined due to Derogs (I had two medical collections that have since been paid and they actually removed from all credit bureaus) and Inquiries (odd since there were only two). My score back then was in 650 range I think.

I'd go for the Delta Platinum, then. You might get a low CL, though.

A higher annual fee with Amex usually doesn't mean a card is any harder to get - it's more a question of the tradeoff of rewards and perks vs. the annual fee.

Thanks for your input! I hate being this wishy washy and I want to apply, but I'm gunshy. I just don't want a frivolous inquiry. My wife and I are hoping to refi our house in the next year to try and go conventional vs FHA. PMI right now feels like money down the drain.

FYI...pulled the trigger today and applied for the Delta Gold. I saw on Reddit that you can call them directly, tell them you have an offer of 50K Bonus miles after $1K spend (3 mos.) and get $50 statement credit after a Delta purchase. Since that was greater than the offer I had in my e-mail, I went ahead and did it. BANG! Approved! I didn't get the "best" interest rate or a high limit ($2K), but I'm basically just using it month to month anyway for work expenses. Just glad I'm rebuilding now!
