How Long?

Postby dfm990 » Tue Jan 13, 2015 1:32 pm

Hey guys, just wondering.

So I'm 24, I have an Amex Gold that Ive had since Dec '13 (my first amex card) at this point and time ive checked my spending ability up to 30,000 and it says approved. I also applied for an Amex Blue Preferred and got it, today marked 50 days since i got it, so i applied for a 3x CLI which was only 3k (they only gave me 1k to start) and also got approved. Mind you i know its not a lot in the broad spectrum of limits but im not complaining, if you look at my older posts you'll see i had a lot of problems with my credit when i was 17-18ish due to credit delinquencies i had because of health problems and hospital bills :( im very thankful that im slowly moving up the credit chain.

Anyways the point of all this is how long before i should request another increase, obviously no time soon but what type of timeline am i looking at? I pay both my Gold and Blue off completely every month.

Id rather request CLI on my amex than on my BofA Rewards Visa since they do a hard pull everytime you request an increase.

Thanks for your help!

You need to wait six months in between increases with Amex even if you have multiple cards with them basically.

Congratulations on the the improvements you've made credit-wise! I've no direct experience, so I can only imagine how hard it is to fight your way out of a downward spiral like that.

Do you know if Amex requires a certain period of time before you can request another CLI? I've never requested one with them (though I have passed 60 days - I need to get on that), so hopefully someone else will know definitively. {EDIT: I didn't see popamode72 replied, but you can still always call in a couple months from now and find out for sure from a CSR}. The bottom line is you might as well request one as often as they allow it. I was told by Discover that they require 90 days between requests, but I have gotten one in less time (I was denied in October, and while calling about something else I asked of they could tell me how much longer I would have to wait; I know it was some time less than 90 days, but they let me make the request and I was approved).

I say this assuming you have nothing to lose by making a CLI request, which is only the case if they don't require a HP. It sounds like you're primarily interested in higher CLs solely for the credit improvement reasons and not out of any practical necessity. There's nothing wrong with being willing to take a HP for a CLI (it just depends on your needs and priorities), but I'd recommend knowing whether it is needed when you go in. That's why I like calling in, personally, to make sure they won't take a HP. If you're in the same boat, you might as well request as much as possible.

Cool... I'll be requesting another increase in June or July then (yes for for credit improvement reasons). I'm guessing at that point I'll request 9k, triple what I have now.

myFICO isn't popular with some here but their 3x CLI guide is useful so definitely take a look at it if you have not already.

I think myfico has a lot of useful information as well as a lot of silliness. But the same could be said of the posts at most message boards. I think the trick with myfico is to be able to distinguish the nonsense from the thoughtful posts.

That's why I still post there, despite the issues I take with the spam that's on the forum. There also tends to be more activity there too though that doesn't always mean that you're gonna get quality advice all the time.

Several people I know there have been very helpful all the way and there are even some people who make posts at MF that would agree with us that the forum does have its issues and it's where I first started out anyway before I found this place and others. In return, I try to be as thoughtful as I can with what I post there and trying to help people and not falling into the trap of becoming a generic congrats bot.

From my experience with amex, I would say wait a good 6 to 9 months to ask for another CLI.
